Exploring another country can be an unforgettable experience. Sometimes a trip expands your horizons and leaves you with a genuine sense of wonder. I felt that sense of “wow” the first time I traveled to Bali, Indonesia — new people, fresh landscapes, volcanoes, beaches and a completely different culture. Later trips across Southeast Asia were enjoyable, but the initial surprise was harder to recapture because many places shared similar features.
Recently I spent time in Austria and Germany, and Europe brought back that feeling of amazement. The contrast in lifestyle, public spaces and natural beauty made the visit feel special. Below are the top reasons I recommend Europe as your next destination, based on my own travels.

Fresh Air
Europe offers clean, crisp air almost everywhere you go — not only in mountain towns but often in cities too. Many regions feature lakes, rivers and snow-capped peaks that contribute to a noticeably fresher atmosphere. Even compared to hill stations elsewhere, the quality and consistency of fresh air in Europe stood out to me.
Pleasant Weather
Europe’s weather varies by season and region, and much of the year can be chilly. Still, visiting during summer brings long daylight hours, warm sun and cool breezes. That combination makes outdoor exploration especially pleasant — think popular hill stations without the overwhelming crowds.
Beautiful Landscape
From green valleys and meticulously kept meadows to crystal-clear lakes, waterfalls and snowy peaks, Europe offers some of the most photogenic and restorative scenery I’ve seen. Unlike artificial or heavily landscaped views, much of this beauty feels untouched and natural. If you enjoy open, green spaces and water features, Europe delivers in abundance.
Tap Water for Drinking
In most parts of Europe, tap water is safe to drink and very clean. Hotel staff proudly mentioned that water often comes straight from nearby mountain sources and matches the quality of bottled water. That convenience is noticeable and makes everyday travel easier.
Healthy Pizzas
If you’re a pizza lover, Europe won’t disappoint. Unlike heavy versions sometimes served elsewhere, pizzas in many European regions feel lighter and more balanced. There are plenty of gluten-free and healthier options, and staples like pasta and sandwiches are often prepared with fresher ingredients and less oil. Overall, the dining experience felt lighter and more satisfying.
Clean Roads
Roads in many European towns and cities are impressively clean, even in rural areas. In Innsbruck, for example, streets are well maintained and often washed early in the morning. Clean public spaces make walking and sightseeing more enjoyable.
Noise-Free Roads
Despite busy streets and traffic, horn use is minimal. Drivers generally follow traffic rules and maintain a calmer road environment. On a week-long stay in Austria I noticed almost no car horns, which made the city soundscape far more peaceful than I expected.
Heaven for Walking
With fresh air, mild noise and pleasant weather, walking becomes a natural choice. You can easily cover several kilometers a day while exploring city centers, riverfronts and parks. I averaged around 12,000 steps a day on this trip and found myself enjoying long, unhurried walks that revealed more of the place than rushed sightseeing would.
Quick Public Transport
Public transport in many European cities is frequent, reliable and easy to navigate. Trams, buses and regional trains connect major neighborhoods with good frequency and clear real-time updates at stops. Google Maps integration makes planning routes straightforward. On one day we rode a bus to its last stop and back, passing farmland and busy streets — it felt like an experience as much as a commute.
Comfortable & Luxury Taxi’s
Ride-hailing services deliver clean, comfortable vehicles quickly. During my stay we frequently received Mercedes, hybrid EVs and spacious multi-utility vehicles. Cars were well maintained and picked up within minutes. Keep in mind that taxi fares in some regions can be higher than in other parts of the world.
Sunset at 9 PM
Long summer evenings are a highlight. In many places, the sun sets around 9 PM, offering extended daylight for sightseeing, riverside strolls and relaxed dinners. Watching a late sunset from a scenic spot or near a historic castle can feel almost cinematic and stretches the day in the best way.
Note: These observations are from my personal travels across Austria and parts of Germany.
Affordable on Miles
Europe can be expensive for hotels and flights, but reward miles make travel more accessible. For example, certain loyalty programs and transfers can reduce the cost of premium cabin travel. If you have accumulated points, this can be an excellent time to redeem them for a memorable trip.
Final Thoughts
Some readers may recognize these experiences while others may be learning about them for the first time. If Europe is new to you, these observations should help set expectations: cleaner public spaces, efficient transport, scenic nature and a generally relaxed pace in many cities. I found the environment healthier and more pleasant in many ways, which affected how I behaved back home — I became more generous with tips and noticed small lifestyle changes.
Avoid tightly scheduled package tours if you want time to breathe, observe and soak in the atmosphere. Slow travel allowed me to notice details that a rushed itinerary would have missed. If you have travel points saved, consider swapping a familiar Southeast Asia plan for Europe this time — the experience may stay with you long after you return.
