Amex Reserve Renewal Now Includes Rs.10,000 Taj Hotel Voucher

American Express has introduced a new renewal benefit for the Amex Reserve card. While the card has not been among the most rewarding in the lineup, this addition changes the value proposition for some cardholders. Here’s a clear summary of the update and its implications.

Reserve Renewal Benefit

  • Benefit: Rs. 10,000 Taj voucher on renewal
  • Spend Requirement: Rs. 5 lakh in the previous anniversary year and payment of the renewal fee
  • Fulfilment: Voucher issued up to 120 days after renewal fee payment

Effectively, this works out to an additional 2% value (as a Taj voucher) on top of the card’s regular rewards and monthly benefits. At first glance that looks appealing, especially for people who use the hotel benefits.

However, the benefit is limited: only cardholders who actually pay the renewal fee are eligible for the voucher. That restriction reduces the appeal for many customers who typically obtain fee waivers.

This restriction likely exists because a large portion of Reserve cardholders receive the card as a complimentary benefit through Platinum charge card relationships. Those members often have renewal fees waived, so the issuer appears to target value toward paying customers.

I checked with Amex support and discussed with other users; here are a few additional points worth noting:

  1. The offer does not apply if the renewal fee is waived based on points redemption or through spend-based waivers.
  2. Amex does not currently allow card upgrades or downgrades in the same flexible manner as some other issuers, for example HDFC.
  3. There are ongoing operational formalities related to earlier regulatory actions affecting card issuers. Amex has reportedly completed required steps, but full normalization of services may take additional time; treat this as an informal update rather than an official announcement.

Bottom line

For most cardholders the new renewal voucher will be of limited interest because it only benefits those who pay the renewal fee and meet the spend threshold. But for cardholders who already use the Reserve as their primary card—those who value Gold/Taj benefits and routinely pay the renewal fee—this change significantly increases the card’s net value and can make the card nearly “free” in practice.

Overall, it’s a useful addition for the segment of paying Reserve members. It would be more compelling if Amex introduced a benefit that applied more broadly to all Reserve cardholders. Previously, the issuer has launched promotions like targeted merchant cashback that benefited a wider audience; similar offers for a larger group would increase overall appeal.
