American Express has introduced a new EMI conversion reward that can appeal both to those who frequently use EMIs and to cardholders looking to earn extra Membership Rewards points. Below are the offer specifics and an analysis of whether converting purchases to EMI makes financial sense.

Offer Details

Offer Receive 5,000 Bonus Membership Rewards® points when you convert a purchase to EMI
Eligible on Purchases of ₹25,000 or more (up to 6 transactions)
Charges Interest at 16% p.a. plus a 2% processing fee
Offer Period 23 March 2021 to 23 April 2021
Fulfilment Points credited on or before 23 July 2021

The Numbers

To illustrate the cost and benefit, consider converting a ₹25,000 purchase to EMI for 3 months at 16% p.a. The approximate charges are:

  • Processing fee (2%): ₹500 + GST ₹90 = ₹590
  • Finance charges (interest): ₹671 + GST ₹120 = ₹791
  • Total out-of-pocket cost: ₹1,381

A 5,000 Membership Rewards point award is typically worth roughly ₹1,850 to ₹2,900 depending on how you redeem—options include the Amex Gold Collection or hotel redemptions such as Marriott where points can yield higher value.

If you redeem points optimally, the net benefit from converting a ₹25,000 purchase could range from about ₹500 to ₹1,600. That means for cardholders who can extract higher redemption value from Amex MR points, this EMI conversion offer may be worthwhile.

Note: You can convert up to six eligible transactions during the offer period, allowing you to earn up to 30,000 MR points total. This limit has been confirmed with American Express support.

Be aware that similar EMI-linked offers have appeared for EMIs taken on merchant platforms like Amazon and Flipkart, where the maximum reward during the offer period is limited to 5,000 MR points.

Update: There is another EMI Offer

There are two distinct EMI offers to note. Details for each are summarised below:

(a) 30,000 MR points offer

  • Available to all eligible cardholders.
  • The EMI conversion request must be made after the purchase is completed.
  • EMI conversion requests should be submitted via IFORM; check your email for the link.
  • Up to 6 transactions can be converted to EMI, each qualifying for 5,000 MR points (6 × 5,000 = 30,000 MR points).

(b) 5,000 MR points offer on Amazon/Flipkart

  • Applicable only if the offer is saved to your card in your Amex online account.
  • Only select merchants qualify.
  • The purchase must be completed using EMI as the payment option at checkout, rather than converting the purchase to EMI after the transaction.
  • Only one qualifying purchase can earn the 5,000 MR points, so the maximum from this merchant-specific offer is 5,000 MR points.

Bottomline

Rewarding EMI conversions with bonus Membership Rewards points is a meaningful improvement over previous approaches that offered small gift cards for EMI conversions. This offer represents a better long-term value opportunity for cardholders who know how to redeem MR points effectively.

If you can extract higher redemption value from Membership Rewards—especially via premium hotel redemptions or curated collections—this EMI conversion offer can offset interest and fees and deliver a net gain. It’s encouraging to see American Express expand rewardable actions beyond purchases to include EMI conversions, and hopefully more offers like this will follow that allow earning larger point amounts.
