Apple Launches Its Own Credit Card — Will It Reach India?

After transforming the PC, mobile and tablet markets, Apple is now moving into the credit card space. Apple has announced the Apple Card in partnership with Goldman Sachs and Mastercard. As with many of its products, Apple aims to rethink how people use credit cards by focusing on simplicity, security and integration with its ecosystem.

Expected market impact

The Apple Card could pose a significant challenge to premium card issuers, including American Express, especially among customers already invested in the Apple ecosystem. Ease of use, integrated rewards and the prestige of an Apple-branded financial product may encourage iPhone owners to prefer Apple’s card over competing options.

That said, the Apple Card’s 1% reward rate on transactions made with the physical card is relatively modest for consumers focused on travel and premium rewards. For heavy rewards optimizers, existing travel-oriented cards may still be more attractive.

However, many typical iPhone users are not interested in maximizing reward strategies. For them, the convenience and added rewards for Apple-related purchases make the Apple Card an appealing secondary or even primary option—similar to how some users sign up for retailer-branded cards to gain specific benefits even if they don’t use those cards for all spending.

Will the Apple Card come to India?

Not immediately. Apple could expand the Apple Card internationally after establishing traction in the U.S., but the company has not launched Apple Pay in India yet, which is a key component of this product.

It’s reasonable to expect Apple to consider new markets over time—possibly within several years—especially if it identifies suitable local partners and regulatory pathways. Expansion timing will depend on market readiness, partnerships with financial institutions, and local payment infrastructure.

While waiting to see whether Apple introduces a credit card in India, consumers in that market can evaluate existing card offers available locally that match their needs and spending habits.
