As you may know, Diners Club credit cards have faced acceptance challenges in India. HDFC, in partnership with Diners/Discover, has been working to reduce these issues with offline merchants. Because HDFC maintains one of the largest networks of PoS terminals in the country, using a Diners card is relatively straightforward in most metros, but cardholders still occasionally encounter problems when merchants use terminals from banks such as Axis or SBI.

Diners Club Credit Cards on Axis Bank Swipe Machines
On a recent purchase in Mumbai, I noticed that Axis Bank now accepts Diners Club and Discover (international) credit cards on its swipe machines. I confirmed this by checking the back of the charge slip (image above). I also recall a past transaction in a non-metro city where my Diners card was accepted on a non-HDFC terminal, and at the time I wondered how that worked. This wider acceptance by other banks’ terminals explains it.

Beyond offline improvements, online acceptance has improved significantly over the last two years. In my recent travels, nearly every hotel I visited — from luxury properties like the Taj to smaller three- and four-star hotels — had HDFC swipe machines displaying the Diners logo. This reflects how actively HDFC and Discover Financial Services are expanding the Diners Club acceptance network in India.
