| Award Availability | Decent |
Virgin Atlantic moved to a largely dynamic award system, which increased overall availability but can raise the miles required for popular dates, routes and cabins. Saver-level seats still appear and offer very good value when available.
Why Flying Club?
Flying Club is especially attractive for travellers who prefer nonstop service to London from major Indian cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru. Availability to London—often even close to departure—is usually good for Economy saver seats. The UK taxes on return legs can increase out-of-pocket costs, but the overall value for one-way award redemptions remains strong.
The program is also useful for intra-Europe travel via SkyTeam partners, and it commonly shows availability for two or more economy seats on many routes.
Membership Tiers
Flying Club has three membership tiers:
- Red
- Silver
- Gold
You earn Tier Points when flying Virgin Atlantic or its partners. Higher tiers offer additional perks, but there are no dramatic sweet spots that make chasing elite status essential for most Indian travellers focused on award redemption.
Intro to SkyTeam
SkyTeam is one of the three major global airline alliances, alongside Star Alliance and Oneworld. SkyTeam includes multiple carriers that enhance Flying Club’s reach across Europe and beyond through partner redemptions.
Taxes & Fuel Surcharge
Virgin Atlantic passes fuel surcharges onto award tickets for its own flights; some partner redemptions, such as with Delta, do not include these surcharges. Taxes and fees can rise substantially with premium cabins, so always check the cash component before booking.
Earning Miles
- American Express India: Transfer Membership Rewards (MR) points to Flying Club. Typical transfer ratios and transfer blocks vary; plan transfers according to the current Amex rules.
- Marriott Bonvoy: Transfer at published rates (often 3:1) with occasional transfer bonuses. Some Indian credit card programs route points through Marriott when direct transfers to Virgin aren’t available.
Amex is often the fastest way to top up Flying Club balances because transfers can be instant. Cards that help accumulate MR points include products from the American Express portfolio; premium Amex cards offer quicker accumulation if you need miles fast. Axis Bank cards can also be used indirectly via hotel program transfers.
Note: Accor points transfer to Virgin Australia, not Virgin Atlantic—be careful with brand names.
Redeeming Miles
Use the Flying Club website and select advanced search to search by points. Virgin refers to business class as “Upper Class” and shows cabin-specific availability. Taxes generally rise with cabin class, so business class can be expensive in fees even when miles required seem reasonable.
Virgin also uses peak dates that may double the miles required for awards. Avoid peak windows unless you have ample miles. The Reward Seat Checker provides a monthly view of availability for flights to or from the UK, which is useful for planning.
Partner Redemptions
Virgin Atlantic published a SkyTeam award chart with distance-based pricing for partner flights. Several partners can be booked online including Delta, KLM, Air France, China Airlines, Korean Air, Middle East Airlines and Xiamen Air. Availability and online bookability for other partners may expand over time.
Redemption Ideas
India to UK
On standard dates, one-way economy award seats to London can start from around 10,000 points; peak dates may require 20,000 or more. Direct Virgin flights often show the best saver availability from India to London.
Intra-Europe
Flying Club offers strong availability on many intra-Europe routes through partners such as KLM and Air France. KLM often has the best availability; Air France sometimes has less. Economy awards are usually a practical choice and include checked luggage on many partner fares.
India to Europe
While direct Virgin flights to London are excellent, award space from India to other European destinations on partner carriers can be more limited. If you need flights to EU cities, consider routing via London or searching partner availability carefully.
India to USA
Redemptions to the United States, especially in premium cabins, tend to be costly in taxes and surcharges and usually are not the best value compared with other programs.
Stop Overs
Flying Club does not allow free long stopovers. One-way awards are priced per segment for many partners, so you can create an itinerary with a stop in a connecting city, but it may increase the miles required and not always be cost-effective compared with a direct award.
Cancellation Fee
Cancellation:
- Virgin-operated awards: 50 GBP (or 70 USD)
- Partner-operated awards: 30 GBP (or 50 USD)
If you cancel more than 24 hours before departure, your miles are refunded along with applicable taxes. Cancellations within 24 hours of departure are not refundable; any cancellation fee will be deducted from refundable taxes where applicable.
Date change: Changes to international flights can incur fees (for example, £30 for UK-originating international flights or US$50 for US-originating international flights, with local currency equivalents elsewhere).
Infant Ticket
Virgin Atlantic charges a small fixed miles amount for lap infants rather than a percentage of the fare. Typical charges:
- Economy: 1,000 miles
- Premium Economy: 2,000 miles
- Upper Class (Business): 5,000 miles
To include an infant on an award booking, select the lap infant option during the passenger selection. This approach often yields significant savings compared to revenue infant fares.
Things to note
Family Pooling
Virgin offers household accounts so members at the same address can pool points. Points held before joining a household account may not automatically combine, so in some cases transferring points (for a fee) may be the simpler route.
Friends & Family
You may book award travel for friends and family from your account, but Virgin can verify passenger details and has strict checks. To avoid complications during boarding, many members prefer transferring miles to the traveller’s own Flying Club account (a nominal fee applies) and letting them issue the ticket.
Award Ticket hold
Flying Club allows a 24-hour hold on award inventory for Virgin-operated flights. To place a hold, contact Virgin Atlantic customer service.
Other Redemption Options
Flying Club points can be used for more than flights. Examples of alternative redemptions include:
- Converting points to hotel programs such as Hilton Honors or IHG Rewards at published rates.
- Redeeming for unique UK experiences, for example hot air balloon rides (where offered).
- Booking chauffeur transfers for Virgin-operated flights using points.
- Stays at select private retreats in resort destinations.
- Elite, very high-tier redemptions: historically, very large point balances could be used in promotions for Virgin Galactic draws—these are exceptional and rare.
Virgin Flight Experience
Upper Class ground service at Heathrow includes a dedicated check-in and access to the Clubhouse lounge. Unlike many lounges, Clubhouse offers significant a la carte service in addition to self-serve items. The Upper Class cabin layout on some aircraft uses a herringbone configuration that provides reasonable privacy, though the hard product may not match some premium carriers. Still, the overall experience is solid for direct India–UK travel.
Support
- India: +91-124-4693030 (9:15 am to 5:15 pm)
- UK: 0344 209 2722
Virgin offers live chat support; wait times vary but agents can be helpful once connected.
Bottomline
Flying Club is a useful program for Indian travellers who value direct flights to London and intra-Europe connectivity. Miles do not expire, award availability to London is generally good, and partner redemptions extend the program’s utility. The main drawbacks are fuel surcharges on Virgin flights and higher taxes for premium cabins. As Virgin adds more partners to its online booking platform, the program’s value will only improve for award-focused travellers in India.
