SBICards has been actively expanding its co-branded credit card lineup. After introducing the SBI Vistara credit cards, the issuer has now launched a premium travel card in partnership with IRCTC: the IRCTC SBI Card Premier. IRCTC itself recently completed an IPO, and this card targets frequent rail travellers with enhanced travel-centric benefits.
For many regular train passengers, the Premier card appears positioned to replace the existing SBI IRCTC Platinum card. The Platinum variant gained solid traction, so a premium upgrade was a logical next step.

Joining Fees
- Joining/Renewal Fee: Rs. 1,500 + GST (renewal fee reversed on annual spends of Rs. 2 lakh)
- Welcome Benefit 1: 1,500 reward points
- Welcome Benefit 2: BookMyShow movie voucher worth Rs. 500 on minimum spends of Rs. 2,000 within the first 60 days
The welcome benefits effectively offset the card fee, making the initial cost reasonable. Note that welcome bonuses are typically one-time and are not granted again on renewal, consistent with how similar SBI co-branded cards have been handled.
Rewards
- IRCTC Train Bookings: 10% back as reward points (applicable to AC1, AC2, AC3 and AC CC)
- IRCTC Flight Bookings: 5% back as reward points
- Dining & Standing Instructions on utility spends: 2.4% as points
- All other spends: 0.8% as points (1 reward point for every Rs. 125)
- 1 reward point = Rs. 1
It may be surprising that IRCTC also offers flight bookings, but the card rewards those transactions too. The 5% return on air bookings is generous, especially since no cap has been specified at launch. Keep in mind the eligibility condition: the booked ticket must include at least one traveller whose name matches the cardholder’s name to earn the rewards.
Note: To be eligible for rewards, the booked ticket must list at least one traveller with the same name as the cardholder.
Milestone Rewards
- 2,500 points on annual travel spends of Rs. 50,000
- 5,000 points on annual travel spends of Rs. 1,00,000
These milestone bonuses effectively increase the return on travel spend. If IRCTC train and flight bookings qualify as “travel spend,” cardholders could combine the base rewards and milestone bonuses for substantially higher effective returns on those transactions.
For example, if a large portion of your spending is on IRCTC travel and you reach the higher milestone, the combined rewards could approach significant savings on travel costs. That said, reaching the top milestone requires considerable annual travel spending.
Features & Benefits
- Save 1.8% transaction charges on railway and air ticket bookings
- 1% fuel surcharge waiver on transactions between Rs. 500 and Rs. 4,000 (exclusive of GST and other charges); maximum waiver Rs. 250 per statement cycle
- Complimentary insurance cover: Rs. 10 lakh for rail accidents and Rs. 50 lakh for air accidents
The card operates on the Visa Signature platform. It does not appear to include airport lounge access, and railway lounge access is not listed as a feature. Given the limited number of railway lounges nationwide, the absence of that benefit is not a major drawback for most users.
Bottomline
The IRCTC SBI Card Premier is tailored for travellers who frequently book rail and air tickets and want strong returns on such spends. The mix of welcome benefits, high rewards on IRCTC bookings, milestone bonuses, and fee offsets make the card attractive within its fee tier. If you can achieve substantial travel spending—particularly around Rs. 1 lakh annually—the card could deliver meaningful savings, potentially up to several thousand rupees per year.
Keep in mind the renewal fee waiver condition: Rs. 2 lakh in annual spends is required to reverse the renewal fee. If your train spending is modest (for example, under Rs. 40,000 annually), the lower-tier SBI IRCTC Platinum card may be a more suitable and cost-effective option.
- Cardexpert Rating: 4/5
Premium cards from other issuers can sometimes offer higher temporary returns on train bookings, but those offers are often limited and not universally accessible. Overall, this is a strong product from SBICards. As with any new card, consider waiting a short while after launch to see how the market and reward mechanics evolve before applying.
