What Happens to JPMiles After the Jet Airways Shutdown?

With Jet Airways grounded and no clear timeline for a return, many members are understandably worried about the fate of their hard-earned JPMiles. The JetPrivilege (JP) loyalty program, which issues these JPMiles, counts nearly 9.8 million members and is majority-owned by Etihad Airways (50.1%). Because Jet Airways still holds the remaining stake, the program has faced disruption and uncertainty.

Below is a summary of the current, practical ways to redeem JPMiles and what value you can expect from each option.

Any Airline Ticket

JetPrivilege currently offers a “Select Flights” feature that allows members to redeem JPMiles on virtually any airline by booking revenue tickets. The number of miles required matches the program’s published levels, but availability and value have changed.

Key points:

  • You typically need to book far in advance—around two months—to secure the best redemptions.
  • Because these are revenue-based redemptions, JPMiles now behave more like a points currency tied to fares rather than distance-based award miles, reducing the potential value for many routes.
  • Approx value: ~0.32 INR per JPMile

Unfortunately, this applies across cabins, including business class, which means many members have experienced a significant drop in value—often at least a 60% decline compared with the program’s previously available award pricing.

Partner Awards

Historically, one of JetPrivilege’s major strengths was its broad partner network, allowing JPMiles to be redeemed on many other airlines. That benefit is largely unavailable now.

Current status:

  • Most partner redemptions are suspended.
  • Etihad remains available for redemptions, confirmed by the JP team as of 19 April at 3 PM, but this may change depending on the program’s situation.
  • Approx value: ~1 INR per JPMile (where partner redemptions still apply)

Etihad redemptions are a useful lifeline, but the longevity and pricing of that option are uncertain.

Gift Vouchers

JP still lets members convert JPMiles into gift vouchers for retailers such as Amazon and Flipkart. While convenient, the value on these redemptions is comparatively low.

  • Approx value: ~0.17 INR per JPMile

Gift vouchers provide an easy option for using miles, but they deliver much less value than airline redemptions historically did.

Hotels

A newer redemption option lets members use JPMiles for hotel bookings. It’s not a standout in terms of value, but it does offer a practical use for miles that might otherwise sit unused.

  • Approx value: ~0.35 INR per JPMile

Many members would prefer third-party travel vouchers (for hotel or flight booking platforms) rather than a built-in booking product, which feels redundant to some users.

Bottomline

In summary, JPMiles have been substantially devalued for most members—by roughly 60% or more in many cases—due to the shift toward revenue-based redemptions, suspended partner awards, and low-value voucher options. That reduction is difficult for long-time members to accept.

What could improve the situation?

  • Onboarding select domestic airlines as partners with distance- or sector-based pricing rather than fare-linked pricing could restore meaningful value for many members.
  • Reinstating partner awards—especially across Etihad’s network—would recover much of the program’s utility, since Etihad already shares partnerships with many carriers.

If Etihad uses its majority stake to re-enable booking across its partner network, JetPrivilege could retain relevance. Absent that, the program risks becoming a lower-value loyalty scheme similar to general points programs that offer limited travel value.

These are the current options and estimates for JPMile redemptions. Given the program’s fluid state, changes can occur; keep an eye on official JetPrivilege communications for updates.
