American Express Platinum Charge card has long been a standout metal card, and it just became more rewarding for fuel purchases. Previously earning 1 MR point per Rs.100 on fuel, the card now earns 5 MR points per Rs.100. Below are the full details of the update and what it means for cardholders.
Offer Details
| Offer | 4 Bonus MR Points per Rs.100 on Fuel Spends |
| Max. Cap. | 5000 Bonus points / calendar month |
| Return on Spend | 1.25% to ~2.5% |
| Fulfilment | 90 days from date of transaction |
This appears to be a permanent card feature rather than a limited-time promotion, though fuel-related rewards can be adjusted periodically given the volatile nature of the fuel category. The benefit effectively lets you charge up to Rs.1.25 lakh in fuel spend per month to reach the maximum bonus points cap.
Do note that some fuel stations impose convenience fees depending on the operator. Typical fee structure is:
- HPCL – No convenience fee (up to Rs.5,000 per transaction)
- IOCL / BPCL – 1% + GST (up to Rs.5,000)
- Other operators – 2% + GST
HPCL may charge a 1% fee beyond Rs.5,000 in a single transaction, but most consumers do not transact above that limit in one go, so this is often not an issue in practice.
Bottom line
This enhancement makes the Amex Platinum Charge card notably more attractive for fuel spending. The boosted MR points on fuel provide meaningful value for cardholders who refuel regularly, and the nil-fee option at HPCL adds convenience for many users.
Personally, I’ve used Amex cards at HPCL for fuel not only for rewards but also for the convenience and absence of fees—small routine spends are easier to manage when you don’t need to optimize each transaction. The new fuel benefit is a pleasant and practical addition for those who prefer simplicity along with decent rewards.
