AmEx Card Review: My Jet Airways Credit Card Experience

As you may know, I already hold two American Express cards (Gold Charge Card and Platinum Travel Card), and the satisfaction of using Amex cards never fades. I searched for a third Amex card for almost a year and finally decided on the Amex Jet card.

Earlier I missed a strong offer for the Platinum Reserve with a supplementary card promotion; the offer still exists but is less attractive now. The Platinum Charge Card’s current benefits don’t appeal to me at the moment, so the Jet card became the best fit.

If you want a detailed rundown of the Amex Jet card’s features and benefits, see the full review: Jet Airways American Express Platinum Credit Card Review. This article focuses on my personal experience after getting the card.

Why Amex Jet Airways Card?

JPMiles Earn Rate — No Cap

  • Earn 8 JPMiles for every INR 150 spent

I previously used the ICICI Sapphiro card, which offers a similar JPMiles earn rate on domestic spends but imposes an annual cap on JPMiles earned. The Amex Jet card has no such cap, which is a clear advantage for higher spenders.

Another small but useful benefit: the card awards JPMiles on transactions below INR 150 as well. For occasional small purchases this adds up over time.

Unlimited Lounge Access

One of the remaining cards in the market to offer unlimited domestic lounge access, the Jet card provides a strong travel perk. For me it mainly adds another option among the 10+ cards in my wallet.

To decide which card to use for lounge entry, I generally pick the card whose other benefits I use less. At present I usually access lounges using my ICICI cards.

Access to Amex Lounge

The card also grants access to American Express’s own lounge at Delhi Airport, which I’ve been eager to visit. That access was one of the reasons I chose this card.

Preferred Hotels Benefit

  • Benefit: iPrefer Elite Tier / Preferred Hotels

I plan to try this benefit during an upcoming stay; a suite upgrade or a special welcome amenity would be a welcome bonus if available at one of the hotels I have in mind.

Application Process

I applied for the card at the new TFS Lounge in Chennai, where the sales team was friendly and helpful. I had a light-hearted exchange with a sales representative who said he refers customers to online reviews when they seem uncertain, so I decided to support his sales target that day.

The card arrived within a week. I like the look — the blue Amex logo contrasts nicely with the card’s silver background.

Credit Limit

The card arrived with a relatively low credit limit, despite my Gold Charge Card allowing very large charges (recently reported up to INR 30 lakh). I called customer care to request a review, but they declined and said the low limit stemmed from my existing charge card limit. It’s possible Amex often starts new cards with conservative limits.

JPMiles Transfer

I was curious about how JPMiles transfer works with Amex and found the process impressive and straightforward.

Amex temporarily holds the JPMiles you earn and transfers them to your Jet Privilege account during statement generation. For example, if the 15th of the month is your statement date, the process looks like this:

  • 14th — JPMiles debited from Amex account
  • 15th — statement generation date
  • 16th — JPMiles credited to the Jet Privilege account

Transfers occur quickly after statement generation. By comparison, HDFC transfers points about a week after a transaction, ICICI can take up to two months, and Axis Vistara Infinite is among the fastest, transferring points in roughly four days.

How to apply?

You can apply offline at an airport lounge as I did, or apply online for potential instant approval. Applying through an Amex referral link may include bonus JPMiles on approval.

Bottomline

Overall, I’m pleased to add the Amex Jet card to my wallet and look forward to using it on my next Jet Airways business-class trip. Unlimited access to Amex and other domestic lounges makes it one of the stronger Jet Airways credit card options in India. The joining fee felt reasonable; the renewal fee remains to be seen, and I’ll evaluate retention offers if they arise.

This is now the tenth active credit card in my wallet, which makes it a bit special to me.
