How I Bought a Brand New iPhone 7 for Just Rs.21,700 — No EMI Needed

I had been using an iPhone 6 – 16GB for about a year, and lately it regularly ran out of storage. The latest iOS updates and app data consumed most of the available space, leaving very little room for photos, music, and videos. That pushed me to upgrade to an iPhone 7 (Rose Gold) in the 32GB variant.

The sticker price of around Rs.60,000 felt steep. Fortunately, my HDFC Diners Club Black credit card made the purchase much more affordable through its rewards and promotions.

Using HDFC Diners Club Black

HDFC Diners Club often runs promotions on major e-commerce sites that multiply reward points on purchases. When I bought the iPhone 7 on Flipkart using the Diners Club Black card, the transaction qualified for enhanced rewards, generating a significant number of points.

I purchased the iPhone 7 for Rs.60,000 on Flipkart using the Diners Club Black card.

Reward points earned: 19,800 (approximate value Rs.19,800)

Redeeming points can require planning, but they can be used toward flights, recharges, or other redemptions that reduce your overall expenses. To put it in perspective, the points I earned were roughly equivalent to several domestic flight redemptions, giving substantial value back from the purchase.

Selling the iPhone 6 through Cashify

Next, I sold my old iPhone 6 to recoup part of the cash. I used Cashify, a service that buys used mobiles. The process was straightforward: download the app, complete the device testing steps, and it shows the buyback price. Cashify arranged a home pickup and paid cash on the spot.

Value received for iPhone 6: Rs.18,500

Putting the numbers together:

Original price: Rs.60,000

Minus reward points value: Rs.19,800

Minus sale of old phone: Rs.18,500

Net cost: Rs.21,700

That’s how I upgraded to an iPhone 7 for roughly one-third of the retail price. Selling the old device and using credit card rewards made the upgrade far more affordable.
