JetPrivilege HDFC World Debit Card Devaluation: What Changed

In the world of payment cards, debit cards rarely stood out—until HDFC Bank launched the JetPrivilege HDFC Bank World Debit Card. At the time of its introduction, it was notable as a first-of-its-kind loyalty debit card tied to a major airline brand, Jet Airways. The card offered several attractive perks, but many of those benefits changed from 15 November 2017 onward. For some cardholders, the updates are deal breakers.

Key changes and how they affect cardholders:

  1. Joining benefits:
    1. Earlier: New cardholders received 2,000 JPMiles as a joining reward, plus an additional 1,000 RPs for applying online. These were credited after a transaction within 90 days of card issuance.
    2. Now: The joining reward has been reduced to 500 JPMiles, credited after one transaction.
  2. Renewal benefits:
    1. Earlier: Card renewal earned 2,000 JPMiles. Given the modest annual fee of ₹500 + GST, this made the card highly attractive purely for the renewal reward.
    2. Now: Renewal rewards have been cut to 500 JPMiles, awarded after a transaction within 90 days of card renewal.
  3. Airport lounge access:
    1. Earlier: The card initially offered unlimited complimentary lounge visits in India; it was later reduced to two visits per quarter, though some users reported continued unlimited access.
    2. Now: It is confirmed that the entitlement is two complimentary lounge visits per quarter. This was verified through the MasterCard helpline IVR, which indicates the remaining two complimentary visits.
  4. JPMiles earning on retail transactions:
    1. Earlier: Cardholders earned 4 JPMiles per ₹150 on international transactions and purchases made on the Jet Airways website. All other transactions earned 2 JPMiles per ₹150.
    2. Now: The card still awards 4 JPMiles per ₹150 for international transactions and Jet Airways purchases. For domestic spending, the structure changed: 2 JPMiles per ₹150 now apply only to domestic hotel, air travel, utilities, apparel, and restaurant spends. All other domestic shopping and online merchant transactions earn just 1 JPMile per ₹150 (excluding jewellery, business services, and fuel). This effectively halves the earning rate on most domestic purchases compared with the previous structure, significantly reducing the card’s value for everyday spending.

Other card features—such as ATM withdrawal limits and included insurance—remain unchanged. However, given the reduced rewards and lounge access rules, many users may find the annual fee of ₹500 + GST hard to justify.

If you hold an HDFC salary account or have Classic-or-higher status in your HDFC portfolio, you qualify for a free VISA/Mastercard EasyShop Platinum debit card. While that alternative lacks notable benefits, it carries no joining or renewal fee.

There are still a couple of reasons to keep the JetPrivilege HDFC Bank World Debit Card. First, if you do not have better debit or credit cards, this card remains superior to many basic debit cards on the market and can still be worth holding. Second, JPMiles earned through this card have extended validity: normally JPMiles expire after three years, but owning any co-branded credit or debit card from a partner bank extends JPMile validity to five years. This card remains one of the most affordable ways to lengthen your JPMiles’ validity.

If you currently own this card, consider whether the reduced rewards and confirmed lounge limits change your decision to keep it. For some, the reduced benefits may make it easy to ditch; for others, the card’s remaining advantages and low cost of entry could still justify keeping it.
