SBICard Anniversary Year Charges Explained for Credit Cardholders

Generally, a credit card’s anniversary year refers to the date the new card is issued. For most banks this applies both to newly issued cards and to upgraded cards, but SBICard handles things differently.

SBICard separates the anniversary year used for annual fee waiver from the anniversary year used for spend-linked milestone benefits. This difference becomes especially apparent when you upgrade a card using a pre-approved offer through the portal, as I experienced when upgrading to the Aurum card.

The reason for the difference is that the upgraded card is billed according to the existing card’s usual billing cycle. In my case, after upgrading to Aurum, SBICard charged the joining fee months later on the regular annual fee date of my previous SBI Prime card.

SBICard does display this information during the upgrade process, but it’s easy to miss the implication: the billing date determines the anniversary for the annual fee waiver, while dispatch date determines the anniversary for milestone benefits.

After a recent report about milestone fulfilment problems on SBICard Prime, I checked my account and confirmed the two calculation periods are indeed different.

In short, here’s how SBICard calculates anniversaries:

  • Anniversary year for Milestone Benefits: starts from the date the new card is dispatched.
  • Anniversary year for Annual Fee Waiver: starts from the date the annual fee is billed to your account.

Because these two dates can be separate when you upgrade, you should plan your spending with both timelines in mind to avoid missing milestone targets or unexpected fee charges.

SBICard’s Spend Analyzer tool is helpful here: it lets you view total card spends and adjust the date range, making it easier to track progress toward milestone benefits within the correct anniversary period.

Final Thoughts

The upgrade system has a practical benefit: you don’t immediately have to pay another annual fee if you already paid one for the previous card year. However, SBICard could improve transparency by clearly explaining that milestone benefits follow the card dispatch date while annual fee waivers follow the billing date, so cardholders aren’t caught off guard.
