American Express Platinum Card Travel Credits: Features & Benefits

A friend recently reviewed his Amex Gold Charge Card, and the responses and questions I received showed strong interest in American Express cards despite their relatively modest rewards. Amex markets its cards well, and because a charge card often comes with a very high (or no preset) spending limit, many people consider owning one for that reason. Below is a clear, updated overview of the American Express Platinum Travel Card and how it performs for frequent travelers.

In short, the American Express Platinum Travel Card is most valuable to frequent flyers—especially those who fly Indigo—because many of the milestone rewards are issued as Indigo vouchers. While you can redeem points across more than 600 options, the best value typically comes from using Indigo vouchers.

American Express Platinum Travel Credit Card Rewards:

  1. Welcome gift: Rs. 4,000 worth of Indigo vouchers
  2. Spend Rs. 1.90 lakhs in a year to get: Rs. 7,700 worth of SpiceJet vouchers
  3. Spend Rs. 4 lakhs in a year to get: Rs. 11,800 worth of SpiceJet vouchers plus Rs. 10,000 voucher from the Taj Group

Effectively, if you reach Rs. 4 lakhs of annual spend, the card yields Rs. 23,500 worth of Indigo/SpiceJet vouchers plus the Rs. 10,000 Taj voucher, totaling Rs. 33,500 in rewards.

That equates to roughly an 8% reward rate when you can fully utilize the airline and hotel vouchers. For travelers who can redeem on Indigo and use the Taj voucher, this card can outperform many premium credit cards in India. Note that specific voucher terms and redemption rules may apply.

  • I recently used the Taj voucher during a stay at Taj Santacruz, Mumbai.

From my perspective, this card is excellent for frequent flyers and effectively offers around a 6% ongoing reward rate if you exclude the Taj voucher as a non-regular benefit. The main downside is that rewards stop increasing beyond Rs. 4 lakhs of annual spend—there are no further milestone benefits past that level.

Amex India vs Amex USA – Where Do We Stand?

American Express in the United States is well known for generous signup bonuses and miles. Those kinds of offers are less common in India, but competition in the Indian credit card market has picked up recently. The Platinum Travel Card suggests Amex India is focusing more on the frequent-flyer segment, offering targeted benefits that appeal to regular airline customers.

Features of American Express Platinum Travel Credit Card:

  • CardExpert rating: 4.5/5
  • Reward rate: Up to ~8% when vouchers are fully utilized
  • Complimentary airport lounge access: Yes — 4 lounge visits per year; most Mastercard lounges participate in the program
  • Foreign exchange markup fee: 3.5% plus applicable service tax
  • Special features: Spend-based milestone rewards and zero liability for unauthorized transactions
  • Personal concierge service: 24×7 Platinum Assist, emergency card replacement, and customer support globally

I don’t see many competing cards—sometimes even higher-end products—matching this level of targeted travel value, especially for Indigo and Taj users. That said, the landscape is evolving, and as the Indian credit card market grows, more competitive reward programs may appear.
