I recently traveled to Assam and Meghalaya, and one of the main reasons for the trip was to stay at Vivanta, Guwahati. The property’s dome design, which echoes the style of the Kamakhya temple, immediately caught my eye. Visiting a Taj property always carries a bit of excitement, so expectations were high.
After finishing our stay at Kaziranga, we moved to Guwahati to catch an early flight, which made it the perfect time to experience the much-anticipated Vivanta. Did it live up to expectations? Read on.

Booking
- Revenue rate: approximately 8,000 INR at the time of stay (now around 10,000 INR)
- Payment: I used Taj vouchers
Besides Taj vouchers, the hotel is widely available on most booking platforms and can be reserved through various hotel redemption portals.
Check-in
We arrived in the evening and requested an upgrade, noting my TIC Gold tier and the request entered at booking. The front office informed us that the hotel was hosting an event and could not provide an upgrade. The staff appeared busy, and upgrades—especially at Taj properties—are not guaranteed, so we were assigned a smaller room.
Room
For the paid rate, the room felt smaller than expected, though it was cozy and comfortable. Much of the price reflects the hotel’s prime GS Road location rather than expansive room sizes. Below are photos from our room.
Property
The hotel occupies a decent footprint, but there isn’t a lot to explore within the property itself. Its biggest asset is the location on GS Road, Guwahati’s main commercial artery. GS Road is comparable to Bangalore’s MG Road but much longer—around 15 km—lined with malls and upscale stores. The stretch surprised me with its scale and variety of shops.
Beyond GS Road, the city quickly shifts back to more typical local scenes, so the hotel’s prime positioning is mainly valuable for shopping and dining convenience.
Food
Breakfast during our stay was average and, in places, below the typical Taj standard. For example, a friend received an undercooked idly and, despite reporting it, received no follow-up, replacement, or apology. That level of service felt off compared to expectations from a Taj property.
Fortunately, GS Road offers many dining alternatives. For dinner we tried Khorikka, which serves a good Assamese thali and is a solid option if you want local flavors outside the hotel.
Bottomline
- Cardexpert Rating: 4/5
Overall, the stay fell short of my expectations, although we were only there for one night. The primary advantage of Vivanta Guwahati is its location: ideal for shopping, exploring the long commercial stretch, and accessing a wide range of restaurants. The price largely reflects this upscale location rather than exceptional in-house amenities or service on the day we visited.
The hotel is convenient for travelers heading out of the city toward Meghalaya or Kaziranga the next day. If you need to be closer to the airport or nearer to Guwahati’s main tourist sites, other hotels may be more suitable.
On our visit the property seemed busier than usual and, for that reason, lacked some of the typical “Tajness” in service.
That said, I was surprised Guwahati still doesn’t have a Marriott property.
