Eligibility Criteria

  • Expected NRV: 50 lakhs via investments

To qualify for the First Private debit card, customers must be enrolled in the First Private Program and typically maintain a minimum Net Relationship Value (NRV) of around 50 lakh rupees, primarily through investments. This threshold is high and may vary by location and over time.

Previously, eligibility was sometimes granted to customers with very large savings balances or fixed deposits (around 1.5–2 crore) at select branches, but the current focus is on investments rather than average monthly balances.

Bank representatives confirm that onboarding via savings account average monthly balance is no longer the standard route; substantial investments are now expected. In exceptional cases, country-head approval may be required.

Investment options for qualifying include pre-listed and pre-IPO equity, bonds, Portfolio Management Services (PMS), Alternative Investment Funds (AIF), offshore investments, real estate, and other instruments.

Membership in the First Private Program also brings lifestyle privileges such as one complimentary locker (subject to availability) and additional curated benefits for high-net-worth clients.

The First Private debit card includes several premium features and a few industry-first elements. Key highlights are:

  • Hybrid metal construction with silver-etched detailing for a premium finish

The presentation and unboxing reflect the bank’s effort to provide an exclusive, premium experience for high-net-worth clients, following a broader trend among private banks to enhance customer onboarding with luxury packaging.

Card look & feel

The card has a refined black finish with silver detailing. Cardholder name appears on the front while the card number is positioned on the back, giving a minimalist and elegant appearance.

Note: As with most metal cards, this card is thicker and stiffer than plastic cards. Take care when inserting it into ATMs and card readers to avoid operational issues caused by rigidity.

Drawbacks

Despite its premium positioning, the card has some notable shortcomings:

  • An international e-commerce and POS markup fee of 2%, which feels excessive for a top-tier product
  • No EazyDiner dining offers, now a common benefit even on mid-tier cards
  • No dedicated movie benefits beyond standard Visa Infinite offers; a regular monthly entertainment voucher is absent
  • Many competing banks’ premium and even some mid-tier debit cards offer stronger dining and entertainment perks, including BOGO or percentage discounts

Application Experience

After meeting the investment requirements and funding the necessary accounts, onboarding commenced but experienced delays. Given that this is a relatively new offering, initial hiccups are understandable, and processes may improve with time.

Bottomline

The IDFC First Private Program and its associated debit card are tailored for affluent clients who prefer a hands-off approach to managing investments. The product targets a select segment of wealthy and ultra-wealthy individuals.

Because eligibility requires substantial investments, this card is suited to individuals who meet those thresholds. However, the absence of a zero markup fee on international transactions and limited lifestyle offers such as dining or movie benefits mean the product leaves room for improvement.

Many benefits overlap with the bank’s Wealth debit card, and given the significantly higher investment requirement for the Private card, the incremental value compared to the Wealth offering may not match the higher onboarding threshold for some customers.
