HDFC Bank rolled out an aggressive, targeted spend-linked offer on select credit cards in April 2021. I received this promotion, which resembles the February 2021 offer with a few tweaks. Below are the details and observations.

April 2021 Offer
| Offer | Spend a specified amount and receive a voucher worth up to Rs.7,000 of your choice (Amazon / Flipkart / Lifestyle / Myntra) |
| Duration | Spend between specified dates in April 2021 |
| Type | Spend-linked / Targeted |
| Fulfilment | Vouchers issued within 90 working days from the offer end date |
| T&C | Offer source: HDFC SmartBuy offer details |
The promotion appears to have been pushed in multiple batches. I received the email in mid-April; the offer start date matched my statement date, so it seems HDFC may be timing these offers by statement cycle. On my Infinia card I qualified for the Rs.7,000 voucher, which is a strong incentive. Several readers reported receiving similar offers around the same time.
Alongside the Rs.7,000 voucher promo, HDFC ran parallel targeted offers such as bonus reward points for spending in certain merchant categories, including on add-on cards. I received one such targeted bonus-points offer on my HDFC Millennia add-on card.
May 2021 Offer
| Offer | Spend a specified amount and receive a voucher worth up to Rs.7,000 of your choice (Bigbasket / Flipkart / Lifestyle / Myntra) |
| Duration | Spend between 07 May 2021 and 31 May 2021 |
| Type | Spend-linked / Targeted |
| Fulfilment | Vouchers issued within 90 working days from the offer end date |
| T&C | Offer source: HDFC SmartBuy offer details |
The May offer was comparable to April’s, and for my account the spending target was slightly lower while keeping the same Rs.7,000 voucher reward. One notable change: Amazon vouchers were not available as a redemption option in May, though Flipkart remained an option.
June 2021 Offer
HDFC also sent a similar targeted offer for June 2021 to select customers. Like May, this version did not include Amazon vouchers for redemption.
Offer Fulfilment
- April Offer: HDFC began fulfilling vouchers for some customers on 12 July 2021; other customers, including myself, received vouchers around 23 July 2021.
- May Offer: Vouchers for the May promotion began getting fulfilled from 26 August 2021.
Bottomline
HDFC’s targeted spend offers improved in value and flexibility, with better redemption brands and unusually high voucher amounts—Rs.7,000 being the highest I’ve seen in a spend-linked HDFC promotion. These rewards do come with higher spend thresholds, so the net benefit depends on your ability to meet the target without changing normal spending behavior.
For my instance, the effective reward rate from the voucher works out to roughly 5% of the qualifying spend, in addition to any regular reward points earned on the card. This summer, both HDFC and Amex have been sending out aggressive targeted promotions, so it’s worth checking your offers and comparing the required spend against the value you expect to receive.
