PayPal Checkout Now Available in India — Secure and Seamless Payments

The wallet market in India is fiercely competitive, but a notable new development is PayPal’s expanded presence. Although PayPal has long been available for cross-border purchases from international merchants, it is now also enabling Indian merchants to accept PayPal Checkout. This means Indian customers can pay with their cards through PayPal without exposing their card details to merchants.

Previously in India, PayPal was limited to facilitating payments to foreign sellers—useful when buying from international sites that accept PayPal, since it lets you pay without sharing your card information directly with the merchant. The important change now is that PayPal Checkout can be used for domestic Indian transactions as well. Indian merchants who integrate PayPal Checkout allow customers to pay securely using cards stored with PayPal, keeping card details private from the merchant’s website.

This offers several advantages. PayPal becomes a single payment option for both domestic and international purchases while providing an added layer of security by hiding card details from merchants. Many users worry about payment security, but in years of personal use I’ve had no issues. For me, saving card details with PayPal feels safer than entering them across multiple websites.

How PayPal Benefits Users

  • You never need to disclose card numbers to merchants.
  • You don’t have to remember multiple card details.
  • The same payment flow works while traveling abroad or shopping domestically.
  • PayPal can be used for foreign transactions on websites that support PayPal Checkout.
  • PayPal Checkout streamlines payment: if a merchant supports it, you can complete a purchase without revealing card data to the merchant.
  • For Diners Club cardholders who use the 10X points programs, PayPal can be especially useful. When a merchant doesn’t accept Diners directly but does accept PayPal, you can still pay with your Diners card via PayPal. Those transactions typically count as normal card transactions (not wallet transactions), allowing you to earn points. In addition to rewards, you gain buyer protection and greater peace of mind by not exposing your card details.

Merchants Accepting PayPal Checkout in India:

  1. BookMyShow
  2. MakeMyTrip (MMT)
  3. Yatra
  4. PVR Cinemas
  5. Abhibus.com
  6. Dineout
  7. Pepperfry
  8. Thomas Cook and others

Current Offers with PayPal:

  • Rs 150 off on movie tickets via BookMyShow
  • 25% discount on selected gifts at Ferns N Petals and other promotions

In my experience, PayPal is reliable and convenient for international purchases whenever the option is available. One caution: if a merchant is running a card-specific promotion—such as a discount only for a particular card issuer—you should pay directly with that card rather than using PayPal to qualify for the offer.

Important Note on Currency Conversion: If you have a VISA or MasterCard and you use PayPal Checkout on a foreign website, avoid PayPal’s currency conversion. Choose to be billed in the merchant’s native currency and let your card provider handle the conversion. For example, if you are charged $100, PayPal might display an equivalent amount in INR at its exchange rate. Instead select billing in the foreign currency and let VISA/MasterCard/Diners perform the conversion—this typically saves about 1% because PayPal’s conversion fees can be higher. This is especially beneficial if you hold cards with low foreign-exchange markups, such as certain premium HDFC, Diners, or other travel-friendly cards.

If you already use PayPal, you likely appreciate the security and convenience it adds. With PayPal now supporting domestic merchants in India, more consumers can enjoy a unified, secure payment experience for both local and international purchases. What has been your experience with PayPal, and will its Indian availability change how you pay online?
