American Express Centurion (Black) Card Review — India Experiences

The American Express Centurion Card from Amex is arguably the most coveted piece of anodized titanium — an invitation-only charge card issued by American Express to select Platinum cardholders who meet undisclosed criteria. Designed for a very affluent clientele, its benefits are tailored to a high-end lifestyle.

This review is contributed by an actual Amex Centurion Card holder in India. I have held the American Express Centurion Card for three years and here is my personal review.

The Concierge Service

The Centurion concierge often enjoys a reputation for delivering extraordinary results, and there are many anecdotes online about exceptional service. However, from my experience in India the service falls short of expectations given the high fees.

The concierge can reliably secure reservations at popular restaurants on short notice and is particularly effective at booking flights.

My experience: response times are inconsistent. Calls are sometimes unanswered, callbacks don’t always happen, and emails can go unanswered for days. The team is competent for flight bookings, where I consistently found strong fares and availability.

I’ve found Centurion often offers the best flight prices compared to other channels.

Technology and Account Access

Despite being positioned as a top-tier product, some account and security workflows feel outdated. For example, one-time passwords (OTPs) for online transactions are sent only to the primary cardholder’s phone, preventing supplementary cardholders from completing online purchases independently. Transaction alerts for purchases made by supplementary cardholders are also sent only to the primary account holder, which can be inconvenient.

The Card Material

The card is manufactured from a thick, weighted titanium that feels premium and substantial. A downside: if you lose the card, replacements can take a couple of weeks because the physical cards appear to be produced overseas.

How to Get the Amex Centurion Card

My path: I held the Platinum Charge Card for several years and, before receiving the Centurion invitation, conducted a large volume of high-value transactions on my Platinum card — roughly INR 3 crores within a relatively short period — and paid the balances on time.

Tip: Holding an Amex Platinum Charge card for several years with consistent high-value spending, particularly on personal luxury categories rather than business expenses, can increase the chance of receiving an invitation. If most of your spend is business-related, you may be considered for a business variant.

Day-to-Day Experience with the Centurion Card

In daily life, the card frequently draws attention due to its weight and finish. Overseas it carries more immediate recognition; in India, many people do not recognize the card or associate special treatment with it, so don’t expect celebrity-style perks simply by showing it.

Conclusion

The Centurion Card is as much a status symbol as it is a benefits package. For most cardholders the steep annual fee is difficult to justify based on tangible returns. The service shortfalls from the concierge team in India further reduce overall value.

True value is most accessible to those who travel extremely frequently — for example, 20 or more international flights per year — where lounge access, meet-and-greet, travel benefits and preferential fares can offset the cost. For others, especially where concierge support is limited, it is challenging to recoup the fees.

For many, super-premium and popular premium cards in India may provide comparable or better value in specific areas. The Centurion remains a product designed primarily for the ultra-wealthy who prioritize saving time and convenience over maximizing savings from reward programs.

The meet-and-greet and immigration assistance offered when booking premium cabins through Amex is a significant time-saver for frequent premium travelers, but for most cardholders the high fee makes it difficult to justify.

Would I accept an invitation? Yes — partly for the card’s uniqueness and to add a titanium piece to my collection. What about you?

P.S. If I missed anything, ask in the comments and I’ll follow up with the cardholder and update the review if needed.
