American Express BookMyShow Monthly Movie Offers and Discounts

It’s been just a couple of weeks since I received my American Express Platinum Travel Credit Card, and it’s great to find attractive movie offers. American Express India has launched a compelling promotion in partnership with BookMyShow.

While other banks promote offers like buy-one-get-one free that are often difficult to redeem, this Amex offer is straightforward and valuable. I only learned about it through a friend and decided to apply.

American Express BookMyShow Offer

The offer: A BookMyShow couple voucher worth Rs.1,000.

The rules: Make at least eight transactions of Rs.1,000 or more within a calendar month to qualify for a BookMyShow Movie Money voucher (eCode) worth Rs.1,000. Each Movie Money voucher can be used to book up to two tickets in a single transaction, with individual ticket prices not exceeding Rs.500.

Important notes:

1. You must register for the offer before making qualifying transactions. (Registration was available at the time of the promotion.)
2. You may transact multiple times at the same merchant; multiple qualifying transactions at the same location count toward the total.
3. The offer had an expiry of June 2016.
4. No convenience fee was charged when redeeming the voucher (typically around Rs.30), so redemptions were fee-free.

Although a Rs.1,000 voucher is appealing, its value depends on local ticket prices. In many non-metro cities where single ticket prices are around Rs.150, the voucher covers only two tickets (about Rs.300), leaving most of its value unused. The voucher is therefore most beneficial in metro areas with higher ticket prices, like Delhi.

I completed eight transactions of Rs.1,000+ last month and am now waiting for the vouchers to be issued. While the terms allowed up to 60 days for issuance, in practice these vouchers are often issued much sooner, sometimes within two weeks. I will update this post once I receive them.

Update: I received the coupon code on 7th April for transactions completed in March. Amex impressed me with the quick turnaround.
