HDFC Diners Club 10X Rewards Extended Through March 2018

If you live in India and haven’t considered an HDFC Diners Club card yet, it’s worth taking a second look. The Diners Club 10X reward program has long been one of the most lucrative ways to earn reward points on everyday spending. HDFC Bank partnered with Diners Club International in 2011–2012 to bring the Diners cards to India. Diners Club introduced the world’s first charge card, and the brand remains well known for premium benefits and accelerated rewards.

When Diners first arrived in India, merchant acceptance was limited and some websites and PoS terminals were hesitant to accept the cards because Diners’ fees were relatively higher than the more widely accepted Visa and MasterCard networks. HDFC changed the dynamics with the 10X program, which allowed cardholders to earn significantly more reward points on spending with selected merchants. At its best, the 10X program effectively provided very high reward rates on targeted categories, and HDFC has periodically extended and revised the program. The program extension announced in 2017 brought important changes worth noting.

HDFC Diners Club 10X Rewards — Changes as of May 2017

  1. The 10X program was extended through 31 March 2018 (previously extended to 31 October 2017 and earlier to 31 July 2017).
  2. Reward earning caps were reduced roughly by half across card variants: Diners Premium now has a maximum accrual of 5,000 reward points (RP) per month and Diners Black has a cap of 25,000 RP per month.
  3. To qualify for 10X points in a statement cycle, cardholders must complete a minimum of five transactions in that cycle.
  4. New partners included SmartBuy, BigBasket, Uber, RedBus, Luxehues, Swiggy, Lifestyle and BookMyShow. Several previously listed partners were removed, including Flipkart, Myntra, Goibibo, MakeMyTrip and Amazon.
  5. Free one-on-one movie ticket limits were added: up to 4 free tickets per month for Diners Black, and up to 2 per month for Diners Premium and Diners Rewardz.
  6. The SmartBuy benefit was clarified to apply only to flight and hotel bookings, and cardholders must continue as a guest on SmartBuy to receive the offer.
  7. 10X reward points do not apply to EMI transactions.

These changes significantly affected the earning potential for heavy users who relied on the 10X categories to accumulate large volumes of reward points. Previously, the maximum monthly accrual for the cards was more generous:

  • Diners Rewardz: previously up to 2,500 RP/month, now capped at 2,000 RP/month.
  • Diners Premium: previously up to 10,000 RP/month, now capped at 5,000 RP/month.
  • Diners Black: previously up to 50,000 RP/month, now capped at 25,000 RP/month.

How this translates into real spending limits: for the Diners Premium card, you can earn 10X points only up to spending of roughly ₹18,750 per month in the eligible 10X categories; beyond that, purchases still earn points but only at the card’s base rate. For Diners Black, the 10X benefit applies up to about ₹75,000 per month in the qualifying categories. The reduced caps make it harder for large spenders to extract outsized value from the 10X program, though the base earning rates still apply on additional spend.

Removing partners such as Flipkart, Goibibo, MakeMyTrip and Myntra makes it more challenging to earn points quickly through travel and popular e-commerce categories, since those merchants were major spending destinations for many cardholders. SmartBuy remains a useful channel and can partially offset the removed partners, especially when used for flight and hotel bookings and other SmartBuy-eligible spends.

Even with these changes, HDFC Diners Club cards remain among the strongest premium credit and charge card options in India for many users. The cards still offer accelerated rewards in selected categories, airport lounge access, and other premium benefits that make them valuable for frequent travelers and lifestyle spenders.

Outlook for the 10X program

The 10X program has been adjusted and extended multiple times. It’s reasonable to expect further reshuffles of partners and periodic extensions as HDFC and Diners try to balance merchant deals and program economics. Over time, if Diners acceptance in India becomes as widespread as Visa and MasterCard, the special partner-driven 10X promotions could be scaled back or restructured. For now, the program continues to offer value for cardholders who optimize spending within the capped categories.

  • Update: 2 May 2017: Dates were briefly adjusted, reflecting the typical 6-month merchant deal cycles and possible interim terms.
  • Update: 6 July 2017: SmartBuy expanded to include more categories such as flights, hotels, recharges, and select shopping, opening additional opportunities to earn 10X points.
  • Update: 31 Oct 2017: Amazon was removed and the 10X promotion was extended through March 2018.

If you follow rewards programs closely and want to maximize returns, continue to monitor partner lists, monthly caps and program terms. The Diners 10X program still offers meaningful benefits if you plan spending around eligible partners and track monthly accrual limits. Consider your spending patterns and the card’s other benefits to decide whether a Diners Club card remains the best fit for your wallet.
