Amex Platinum: Get Taj Vouchers Worth ₹30,000 on ₹1 Lakh Travel Spend

Amex Plat Taj voucher offer

American Express recently rolled out an attractive promotion for Platinum Charge Card holders. The offer is valid through 31 December 2021, giving cardholders ample time to plan eligible travel and bookings.

Offer Details

Offer Spend Rs.1,00,000 or more with Platinum Travel & Lifestyle Services and receive Taj vouchers worth Rs.30,000
Offer period Offer available until 18 June 2021 for bookings and valid for travel and stays until 31 December 2021
T&C Applies to a single travel booking (multiple trips are not eligible)
Fulfilment Vouchers issued within 60 days after completion of the entire journey

Effectively offering a 30% return on qualifying spend, this promotion is competitive with other premium card rewards, such as certain HDFC premium cards that provide similar value in points. The extended travel validity until December 2021 is a useful feature for planning longer trips.

That said, many frequent travelers, myself included, cover most stays using reward points, so the opportunity to hit the required cash spend may be limited.

For many regular readers and cardholders, this offer may not be immediately useful.

I considered using the offer for friends who are planning honeymoons and thought to make use of supplementary cards to consolidate spend. However, their combined honeymoon expenses were below Rs.1,00,000, and splitting the trip into multiple bookings would disqualify them under the single-booking requirement.

In short, the Rs.1,00,000 single-booking threshold makes it difficult for most domestic trips to qualify, unless the booking involves a large family trip, a high-end resort, or destinations with higher travel costs like Andaman.

Final Thoughts

This promotion appears to be a domestic substitute for the international-travel offers American Express has previously run for Platinum and Centurion cardholders. While the reward level is generous relative to spend, the high minimum spend limits the pool of eligible cardholders.

A lower threshold — for example, Rs.50,000 for Platinum Charge Card members — would likely appeal to more people and produce greater uptake. As it stands, a Rs.1,00,000 single booking requirement will only suit travelers planning premium or extended domestic stays.

There will certainly be cardholders who can take advantage of this deal, but overall participation is likely to be modest given the conditions.
