These 100% cashback promotions on metal cards are rare in the market, and Amex is once again setting trends with offers like this—similar to how other issuers have driven attention with unusual reward multipliers.

For context, the black card recently received a notable Rs.50,000 cashback offer, which many felt was well deserved.

From personal experience, the previous 100% cashback promotion (up to Rs.27,500) was extremely useful—I used most of it to buy an M1 MacBook Air on Flipkart. This time, I’m likely to use the credit for festive purchases at Croma.

Given the timing, this promotion appears timed to capture the festive shopping window. With Diwali falling on November 4 and the offer ending November 7, it effectively serves as a seasonal benefit for cardholders.

Bottom line

This marks roughly the fifth 100% cashback-style offer Amex has launched since the Covid-19 outbreak, and the value on offer seems to be improving. Such promotions have become a way for the issuer to provide meaningful short-term value when other categories, like travel, are subdued.

These offers are largely shaped by the pandemic’s impact on consumer behaviour

As travel demand dips during waves of the virus, Amex appears to redirect rewards toward shopping and dining partners, offering attractive alternatives for cardmembers.

It is unfortunate that new Amex cards are not being issued at the moment due to regulatory constraints, which prevents new customers from applying for these metal cards and accessing current promotional benefits.

Existing cardmembers, however, may still be eligible for upgrades if Amex chooses to resume those internally as some banks do. At present, Amex has not publicly resumed upgrades for new customers, but should regulatory restrictions persist, selective upgrades may become more likely.
