American Express introduced a limited, targeted promotion for September–October 2021 that increases the value of Membership Rewards (MR) points when redeemed for statement credit. Under this offer you receive 30% of the redeemed points back, up to a maximum of 10,000 MR points. Below is a clear breakdown of the offer and what to expect.
Offer Details
| Offer | Get 30% points back on redemption |
| Max. Points | 10,000 (on redeeming 33,333 points) |
| Offer Type | Targeted |
| Effective MR Point value | 35Ps/point |
| Equivalent spend/credit | 8,250 INR |
| Offer period | 6th Sep – 31st Oct 2021 |
| Fulfilment | 28 February 2022 |
In effect, this promotion raises the redemption value for statement credit from the usual 25 paise per point to about 35 paise per point when you redeem specifically for statement credit. The offer applies only to certain redemption methods:
- SafeKey transactions
- Select & Redeem (pay card charges with points)
This was a targeted offer I received on the Amex Reserve card. It represents a reasonable option for cardholders who do not have Gold cards with the option to redeem points for gold collection, and for Gold cardholders who lack sufficient points for the 18k or 24k gold redemptions.
Important: Even if points from multiple cards are combined in your MR account, the promotion applies only to redemptions made using the specific card that received the offer.
One drawback is the long fulfilment window: the promotional points were scheduled to be credited by 28 February 2022, which is roughly four months after the offer period ended. Waiting that long to realize the benefit is less than ideal for a premium issuer like American Express.
Despite the delay, Amex has generally fulfilled these promotions, and I remained optimistic about timely crediting. Update: Offer fulfilled on 26th Nov 2021.
Final Thoughts
Returning a portion of redeemed points is an inventive promotion and can be valuable for targeted cardholders. That said, broader eligibility or a higher rate—such as 40% for the same construct, or a more modest 20% applied to all redemption types—would have made the offer more compelling.
Overall, it is encouraging to see frequent promotions from American Express since August 2021. If you received this offer, consider whether the redemption methods and fulfilment timing align with your goals before redeeming points for statement credit.
