Update: The key benefit of this card (complimentary airport transfer) has been discontinued.
Bank of Baroda has launched two premium debit cards to target higher-end customers: the Sapphire and the Opulence. Sapphire is positioned as an affordable premium debit card, while Opulence is a super-premium metal card with a higher annual fee. This article provides a concise review of the BOB Sapphire debit card, which is already in circulation.

Overview
| Type | Premium Debit Card |
| Reward Rate | Nil |
| Joining / Annual Fee | 750 INR +GST |
| Welcome Benefit | 750 INR Lifestyle Gift Card |
| Eligibility | BOB SB A/c with AQB >10K INR |
| USP | Airport transfer benefit |
The BOB Sapphire debit card stood out at launch because it included an airport transfer benefit at a modest price point. While other premium debit cards often focus on lounge access or rewards, Sapphire initially paired lounge privileges with a limited airport transfer service.
Design
The card is available in two designs, tailored as variants for different tastes. The styling is elegant: clean, modern and understated. However, the prominent “debit” label and the BOB World logo feel visually heavy and could have been subtler. The front of the card no longer shows the cardholder name in some recent print runs, likely a move to simplify production.
Airport Lounge Access
| ACCESS TYPE | VIA | LIMIT |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic Lounge Access | Visa | 2/Qtr |
Like many Visa Signature products, Sapphire offered two domestic lounge visits per quarter. This is a familiar benefit for premium cardholders and adds value for domestic travelers seeking comfort at airports.
Airport Transfer Benefit
| ACCESS TYPE | VIA | LIMIT |
|---|---|---|
| Airport Transfer Service | Visa | 1/Qtr |
Airport transfer services are uncommon even on credit cards, so including this on a debit card was a notable move. At launch, Visa Concierge handled bookings, coordinating with local car providers for pickup and drop. This benefit differentiated the Sapphire card from many peers.
Booking Airport Transfer
Bookings were handled through Visa Concierge via WhatsApp chat or phone. The concierge coordinates with partner cab operators and confirms details before the trip. In practice, service quality can vary by city and operator, but users reported a generally smooth experience. Notifications with driver details and a confirmation call were part of the process.
Coverage for the service varied by city and depended on partner availability. When it worked well, users appreciated earlier access to driver details compared with some other premium services.
BOB A/c Opening Process
If you want to apply for the Sapphire card along with a new Bank of Baroda savings account, the typical process is:
- Visit a BOB branch and complete Aadhaar-based digital account opening with a branch executive — the process usually takes about 15 minutes.
- The branch activates the account within a few hours; follow up if activation is delayed.
- Fund the account with more than 10,000 INR via NEFT/IMPS to meet eligibility.
- Request the branch executive to apply for the Sapphire debit card for your account.
- The virtual card typically appears in the mobile app within a few days (without CVV); the physical card can take a week or longer to arrive.
Some customers experienced delays in receiving the physical card and had to contact their branch. The virtual card was usually sufficient for booking the airport transfer. Note that internet banking features may be limited compared to the mobile app, so the bank’s app is the more complete channel for card features and management.
Welcome Kit
The card arrives in a modest welcome kit that includes a mini catalog and a 750 INR lifestyle gift card as the welcome benefit. The gift card can be redeemed both online and offline; the PIN is usually sent via SMS. For reliability, receiving the PIN through email as well would be preferable, since SMS delivery can occasionally fail.
Bottomline
- Cardexpert Rating: 3/5 (updated)
BOB Sapphire is easy to obtain and straightforward to use. For travelers seeking modest premium perks without paying high fees, it was an interesting option—especially given the initial inclusion of airport transfer service. Bank of Baroda’s move to introduce premium features on debit cards is noteworthy and may prompt similar offers from other issuers.
If the bank extends similar benefits to credit cards, those could become compelling alternatives. For now, Sapphire provides a decent mix of convenience and value for users who can make the most of its lounge and (previously) transfer benefits.
