Over the past six months American Express has been relatively quiet on promotions compared with its previous cadence. Recently, however, Amex launched a targeted spend-based promotion for select cardholders. The offer applies to the American Express Gold Charge Card, Membership Rewards Credit Card (MRCC), and the Reserve card. A similar communication was later sent to Platinum Travel card users—details below.
I received this offer by email for the Gold Charge Card and a different variant for the Platinum Travel card. Here are the key details and practical notes.
Offer Details – Domestic Hotel Stay Gift Card up to Rs. 15,000
Use your American Express card during the offer period and you may receive an American Express Domestic Travel hotel stay e-gift card worth up to Rs. 15,000 based on cumulative spend.
- Gift Card worth Rs. 6,000: cumulative spend of Rs. 1.5 lakh or more
- Gift Card worth Rs. 15,000: cumulative spend of Rs. 4 lakh or more
- Offer period: 15 March – 30 April, 2018
- Fulfilment: within 90–120 days from 30 April 2018
- Total spend includes purchases on supplementary card(s)
- No spend-category restrictions and no minimum transaction size
- Indicative reward rate: ~3.75% from the incentive + 1% base reward = ~4.75% effective savings

Gift Card Terms
- Gift cards are issued as American Express Domestic Travel e-gift cards
- They can be redeemed only for domestic hotel bookings on the Amex domestic travel portal
- No cash refund for unused balance; typically one-time use
- Amex may, at its discretion, replace the gift card with an equivalent-value gift card from another online travel agency or with a statement credit to the enrolled card account
Amex’s domestic travel portal is powered by Cleartrip, so the voucher functions much like a Cleartrip coupon code used in other milestone spend promotions.
After a relatively muted Diwali promotion in 2017 compared with 2016, this spend-based hotel voucher helps make up some of the value lost by frequent Amex users.
Bottom line:
If you travel domestically with any regularity, this is a worthwhile targeted offer. The effective reward rate is better than many super-premium cards’ base rates, so taking part makes sense if you already plan substantial spend during the offer window.
For context, the Rs. 15,000 voucher achievable at Rs. 4 lakh of spend typically covers about three nights at a mid‑four‑star hotel or two nights at many five‑star properties, depending on booking date and property. The voucher may also help offset renewal fees in some cases.
Updates
- A similar offer was made available to Amex Platinum Travel cardholders; you may be able to combine this with other milestone benefits if eligible.
- Fulfilment began in late July 2018. I received my voucher on 23 July 2018 for eligible spends on the Gold Charge Card. The voucher is redeemable on the Amex Domestic Travel site (Cleartrip-powered) but note the typical expiry window is relatively short—around 60 days from issue.
