I’ve long felt it’s unfair that CIBIL charged Rs. 550 for an individual to view their own credit score and report. Credit bureaus earn from lenders and financial institutions, so charging consumers the same fee seemed unreasonable. Fortunately, the regulator stepped in to make things better.
In September 2016 the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) directed all credit bureaus in the country to provide every individual one free full credit report (FFCR) each year, starting January 1, 2017. That report is a detailed document that includes your credit score and other important information.
Free CIBIL score
Now you can request this free annual report once every calendar year (January–December) from any of the three credit information companies (CICs) operating in India: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion CIBIL.
How to get your free CIBIL score
- Visit the official free report page for the CIC you prefer.
- Look for the free report option, usually located below the prominent “Monitor Now” or paid-service button.
- Click the free report link, complete the form and complete the identity authentication steps to access your free CIBIL score and full report.
- The process is quick — typically a minute or two — and worked smoothly when I tried it.
It’s a simple and useful consumer protection. Checking your credit report at least once a year is important: it lets you verify records, detect errors or fraud, and understand your credit standing if you plan to apply for credit cards, loans, or other financial products.
- If your score is low, consider proven steps to improve it, such as timely payments, reducing credit utilization, and responsibly managing existing accounts.
My experience with paid CIBIL service
I did have a poor experience with CIBIL in the past when a paid report was not delivered due to a redirect issue after payment. Their email support took a week to respond and phone support was frequently unavailable. Ultimately I raised a dispute/chargeback with my card issuer to resolve the matter. That episode highlighted one advantage of credit cards — buyer protection — and also reminded me that even established companies need to maintain reliable customer service.
