I decided to upgrade my IndusInd Exclusive account to Pioneer Banking to try the Pioneer debit and credit cards. The move was partly driven by the card design — admittedly a bit superficial — but the rewards are reasonable as well.
The Pioneer debit card offers 0.5% returns on spends. The Pioneer Legacy card provides 1% rewards on weekdays and 2% on weekends, and if you spend INR 600,000 annually, the reward rate increases by an additional 1%.
In late November 2021 I received a complimentary invitation from IndusInd to join Pioneer Banking. I accepted on the call and they immediately processed my upgrade request.
IndusInd appears to select a new group of accounts each month for Pioneer upgrades. If you qualify, you may receive a call from a relationship manager or a team in Mumbai, as I did.
The process was smooth: I received an upgrade request ticket alert the same day, a dispatch notification two days later, and the welcome kit (including the Pioneer debit card and a cheque book) within a week.
I was pleasantly surprised to find a Visa Infinite debit card in the kit. Since Pioneer was initially launched on the Mastercard platform, I expected a Visa Signature variant, so the Infinite tier was an unexpected upgrade.
The debit card has a clean, attractive design with the card numbers placed on the back. The edges appear golden from the side, and the logo and some design elements shimmer in different colors when exposed to light. A few photos are shown below.
I checked availability of the Pioneer Legacy credit card on Visa, but it appears that the Visa variant is not yet live.
Final Thoughts
Overall, IndusInd’s Pioneer Banking is a strong offering. In some respects it even outperforms competitors like HDFC Imperia: it has no markup fee and offers attractive debit card benefits and rewards. For customers who value card design, premium debit features, and straightforward reward structures, Pioneer is worth considering.
