Maximize Value When Redeeming HDFC Reward Points

HDFC Bank is the largest issuer of credit cards in the country. With so many cards in circulation, cardholders often accumulate substantial spending and, consequently, large balances of reward points in their accounts.

This guide explains how to redeem HDFC credit card reward points to get the best value from them.

The article focuses on HDFC super-premium cardholders (Infinia and Diners Black). Redemption rates and transfer ratios can differ for other HDFC cards.

Flights & Hotels

  • Instant redemption on the SmartBuy portal
  • Typically 70% of the booking can be covered by points and 30% needs to be paid by card
  • Spending the 30% on card often earns you 10X rewards on eligible cards

HDFC SmartBuy is the simplest and often the most valuable way to redeem points. Flight redemptions usually provide better value than hotel bookings, since hotels are frequently available at deeper discounts elsewhere.

The SmartBuy booking engine is powered by Cleartrip, so availability follows what Cleartrip offers. Most mainstream hotels and flights will appear, but some lesser-known properties or niche carriers may be missing.

Hotels: Offbeat or lesser-known hotels may not be listed. For example, some properties I wanted during a trip to Assam and Meghalaya were available on other booking sites but not on SmartBuy.

Flights: Certain low-cost carriers, such as AirAsia, might not appear on the portal. In those cases, HDFC Concierge has been able to help with backend bookings in the past. If you can’t find a flight, check with concierge before switching to other options.

DTH & Experiences

DTH: Infinia cardholders can redeem points to pay for DTH subscriptions, which is a small but useful benefit compared with other HDFC cards.

Experiences: The SmartBuy portal also lists experiences in select international cities. Choose a destination from the city dropdown to explore local activities and tours you can redeem points for.

This option can cut your expenses while traveling abroad. For example, you may be able to redeem points for Universal Studios entry in Singapore, including hotel transfers, for a modest number of points.

Air Vistara: Club Vistara

Mocktail on Vistara Business Class (BlackCurrant)
  • Transfer ratio: 1:1 for super-premium cards and Diners Club Miles
  • Validity: Transferred miles are valid for three years from the transfer date
  • Transfers typically take around three business days

If you fly Vistara regularly, transferring HDFC reward points to Club Vistara can be a smart move. Business class or last-minute award redemptions on busy routes often yield higher value.

Expect roughly 0.75 to 1 INR per HDFC reward point for many business class redemptions, which is a reasonable return compared with other options.

You will still be liable for taxes and surcharges on award tickets—commonly around 500 INR—and award seat availability can be limited, especially within a week of departure.

Tip: Time your transfers to coincide with transfer bonus promotions when they appear. Promotions such as points-bonus events can significantly boost the value you get from transfers.

Singapore Airlines: KrisFlyer

  • Transfer ratio: 1:1 for super-premium cards and Diners Club Miles
  • Validity: Miles are valid for three years from the transferred month

For international travel, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer is one of the best redemption options available. Business class redemptions can deliver excellent value on many routes.

You can often expect around 1 INR per HDFC point for business-class redemptions, and some routes may provide even better value.

Occasionally there are promotional offers—for example, status or bonus miles for large transfers—which can tip the balance if you have a clear plan for using the miles.

Such promotions are attractive but should be used only if you have a concrete redemption plan. Large transfers without a strategy can be risky.

eVouchers

  • Typical valuation: 1 point = 0.50 INR for super-premium cards when redeemed for eVouchers
  • eVouchers are usually delivered within about five business days

If you’re not a traveler, eVouchers—especially Amazon gift cards—are a practical way to redeem points. These vouchers are versatile and closely approximate cash value.

Always redeem eVouchers through the SmartBuy portal for the best value. Redeeming via the bank’s net banking or statement credit options often yields much poorer rates.

While eVouchers may seem like a lower-value redemption, they still translate to a useful cash-equivalent return on everyday spending and are worthwhile if you want to reduce out-of-pocket expenses.

Avoid taking statement credit at very low rates per point—Amazon vouchers usually offer better practical value.

My Redemptions

SriLankan Airlines Business Class

Here’s how I personally redeem HDFC reward points:

  1. Flights/Hotels: I frequently used SmartBuy for flights and hotels. One memorable redemption was a flat-bed business class ticket on SriLankan Airlines.
  2. Club Vistara: When points approach expiry, I often transfer them to Club Vistara since I fly Vistara occasionally. These transfers support useful business-class redemptions.
  3. eVouchers: To reduce out-of-pocket expenses, I sometimes redeem Amazon vouchers, which are nearly cash-equivalent.
  4. KrisFlyer: I’m considering transfers to KrisFlyer depending on international travel plans and route connectivity. Decisions here depend on when travel options reopen and whether routes match my needs.

Bottom line

HDFC Bank provides a solid set of redemption choices. The SmartBuy portal, airline transfers, and eVouchers cover most needs. Still, it would be beneficial if HDFC added more direct airline and hotel transfer partners—similar to offerings from Citi and American Express.

A return of Hyatt as a transfer partner—at least for Diners Club cards—would be welcome, since there are currently few banking partners in India that link to Hyatt.
