In my limited experience with equity investing, the Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) stands out for rewarding shareholders with generous discount coupons. These offers typically include 25% off on stays, dining, spa treatments and more, subject to certain terms. Below I summarise some recent offers I received over the past year and share thoughts on their usefulness.

25% Off on all Spends
- Offer: 25% OFF on the Best Available Rate across participating hotels in India, and 25% OFF on spends at selected restaurants, spas and salons.
- Discount mode: Digital Coupon
- Offer Period: Valid for stays until 31 July 2022
25% Off on Dining
- Offer: 25% OFF on dining spends, up to Rs. 2,500. Several physical vouchers were mailed to shareholders.
- Discount mode: Physical Voucher
- Offer Period: Valid until 31 Dec 2022
I plan to redeem these vouchers next year, though the instructions that accompany them are not always precise. In practice, presenting the voucher to the hotel executive has generally been enough for them to apply the discount.
Discounted Epicure Plans
IHCL also offers discounted Epicure membership plans to shareholders. While this is a thoughtful perk, the discount I received was modest—under 10% off the regular price. A larger reduction, such as 30%, would make the offer much more compelling.
Are they useful?
If you frequently stay or dine at Taj properties, these coupons can generate meaningful savings. Gold members already enjoy some benefits—like 25% off on stays—so the dining vouchers are particularly valuable for non-stay spending. Many Taj restaurants are not listed on third-party dining platforms, so shareholder vouchers can be the most convenient way to secure discounts.
I have received the offers described above but haven’t used them yet, largely because my gold membership already secures competitive room rates and I often rely on other dining promotions for savings.
Criteria for receiving coupons
How do you qualify for these coupons?
IHCL’s distribution method isn’t publicly documented, and I’m not certain of the exact criteria. Anecdotally, some shareholders report receiving vouchers while holding only a few shares. From my circle, however, most recipients held roughly 100 IHCL shares for a year or longer.
It would make sense for larger shareholders to receive proportionally better perks, but I don’t have confirmation of tiered benefits for holdings of, say, 10,000 shares. If you know of such cases, please share your experience.
Bottomline
Beyond dividends, shareholder-exclusive offers from IHCL are a welcome way to reward investors who enjoy Taj properties. These vouchers enhance the value of share ownership for those who travel and dine at Taj hotels, and they reflect positively on shareholder engagement.
It would be encouraging to see other listed companies adopt similar rewards. Imagine food delivery platforms or restaurants offering substantial shareholder discounts—those kinds of perks would certainly strengthen investor loyalty.
