Westin Chennai Velachery is a 10-storey, five-star hotel situated in Velachery, Chennai, India. Opened in February 2013 as the sixth Westin property in India, the hotel features a striking central courtyard with a 35-foot cascading water feature and modern luxury suited to both business and leisure travelers.
Location: The hotel sits in the heart of one of Chennai’s busiest neighbourhoods. It’s within walking distance of Phoenix Marketcity, the city’s largest mall, and a wide variety of restaurants and entertainment options. For visitors who want convenient access to shopping and dining, this location is hard to beat.

Booking
- Revenue Rate: Approximately Rs. 7,000 + GST
- Points Rate I Used: 3,000 SPG points for a weekend stay (equivalent to 12,500 Marriott points under current conversion)
Before the Marriott–SPG merger, SPG’s weekend points packages offered attractive discounted redemptions, and I used those deals multiple times to match my travel plans. As an SPG Gold member I could also request a late checkout up to 4 PM, which effectively extended a one-night stay into a longer visit and added value to the booking.
Check-in & Lobby
We were assisted by a new trainee during check-in. She informed us that we had been upgraded to a Club-level room with a pool view and escorted us to the room. When I asked about Executive Lounge access she said she would confirm by phone, but I didn’t receive a follow-up. I was on a tight schedule so didn’t pursue it further.
Welcome Amenity
The welcome amenities at Westin Chennai offer noticeable value. For my stay the inclusions were:
- Fruit basket
- Choice of coffee, chocolate, fruit platter, or a wine coupon (one per person)
- Choice of points or a local gift (SPG Gold benefit)
I estimated the combined value of these amenities at roughly Rs. 1,000, making them a meaningful addition to the stay. The welcome presentation can be charming—on one visit the team placed a small stuffed “King-Kong” toy in the room, which was a lighthearted touch.
The Room
Rooms at Westin Chennai follow a contemporary luxury design suited to business travellers. Neutral beige tones and wood flooring give a calm, upscale feel reminiscent of other top-tier properties. The furnishings are functional and comfortable, with a dedicated work area and a television positioned for convenient viewing.
The Property
Though the exterior footprint might suggest a smaller building, Westin Chennai Velachery offers all the amenities expected from a business-class hotel and more. Guests have access to a well-maintained swimming pool, spa services, and a gym.
Spa: The on-site spa is popular and often features promotional offers through local deal platforms. Friends who used such apps reported savings greater than the standard member benefits, making it worth checking promotions before booking treatments.
Swimming Pool: The pool area is clean and inviting, suitable for both a quick swim and relaxed downtime after a day exploring the city.
Gym: The gym provides essential equipment for a workout, though the space is compact and can feel a bit tight compared with larger hotels in the same category.
Breakfast & In-Room Dining

Breakfast offers a decent spread with strong vegetarian options. Non-vegetarian selections were adequate but not particularly memorable. Overall the breakfast experience was satisfactory.
During one visit a 15% dining discount for SPG Gold members was not applied at the bill despite raising the issue at the restaurant. The staff promised to follow up multiple times but did not, requiring me to escalate directly with SPG later to have the discount credited on a subsequent stay.
Service
Having stayed at this property multiple times, I found service quality inconsistent. Requests sometimes required intervention through the loyalty program to be resolved, and responses can feel indifferent on occasion. There is room for improvement in attentiveness and follow-through, particularly for frequent guests and members.
Bottomline
Westin Chennai Velachery is a reliable choice for visitors who want a comfortable, well-located base in Chennai for business or short city stays. The property’s design, amenities, and convenient location are strong positives. Service standards are the main area that would benefit from enhancement.
Although point redemptions and weekend offers were particularly generous before the SPG–Marriott merger, reasonable value can still be found using points or promotional rates today. For overall value, comfort, and location, the hotel remains a strong option.
