Disclaimer: This is not a real card; it’s an imagined concept by CardExpert. Here are other concepts by CardExpert.
I have been waiting for a Marriott credit card to launch in India for a long time, especially from American Express, since Amex already partners with Marriott in other countries such as the United States. Even after the launch of the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program, a dedicated Marriott card in India still looks unlikely in the near term.
There are several possible reasons for the delay — the Marriott/SPG merger, uncertain demand, or strategic choices by issuers. In any case, I don’t expect such a card to arrive in India in 2019, so I decided to design a concept to imagine what it could offer. 🙂
Below are my Marriott credit card concepts for India, designed in two variants: Premium and Super Premium. I’ve outlined fees, rewards, and benefits for each.

#2 Super Premium
Fees:
- Joining/Annual Fee: Rs. 30,000 + GST
- Welcome Benefit: 100,000 points (60,000 bonus points on first swipe; additional 40,000 bonus points on spending Rs. 2,00,000 within the first 90 days)
- Renewal Benefit: 2 Free Night Awards (each valid at properties redeemable for 50,000 Marriott Bonvoy points or less)
Earn Rate:
- 10 points per Rs. 100 at Marriott properties (Reward Rate: 5%)
- 8 points per Rs. 100 on all other spend (Reward Rate: 4%)
- 20 Elite Night Credits annually
Ongoing Benefits:
- Elite Tier: Instant Gold Elite status; fast track to Platinum Elite on spending Rs. 15,00,000 in the card anniversary year
- Foreign Transaction Fee: 0% markup on foreign currency transactions
- Lounge Access: Six domestic and six international lounge entries per year
With annual spends around Rs. 20,00,000, this card could yield roughly 15 complimentary nights at a Marriott Category 3 property, enough for multiple domestic or international luxury getaways.
Note: I have assumed 1 point ≈ Rs. 0.50 for valuation, which is achievable in many real examples from stays at Marriott properties.
Can it become a reality?
Yes — it is quite possible. Marriott is expanding quickly across Asia, including India, so a cobranded credit card could make strategic sense. However, issuers may perceive demand as limited, perhaps because not many cardholders currently transfer points to Marriott from programs like Amex’s.
If a Marriott card were to launch in India, the most likely partners would be American Express and HDFC Bank. Amex is an obvious candidate due to its global Marriott relationships. HDFC is also plausible, given existing ties such as Club Marriott benefits on certain HDFC cards.
Bottomline
With growing competition in the credit card market and many new entrants increasing the cardholder base, a Marriott cobranded card could be an attractive upgrade for travelers seeking hotel benefits. If you want such a card in India, the most effective step is to express interest directly to issuers.
Call American Express or other banks and tell them you would like a Marriott credit card. Issuers do listen to customer feedback, and a meaningful number of requests can help influence product decisions.
