The Excursionist Perk, part of United MileagePlus, lets members include a complimentary one-way segment within certain multi-city award itineraries. It’s United’s way of offering a free stopover on award bookings when specific conditions are met.
To qualify for the Excursionist Perk, you must book an itinerary composed of three or more one-way award flights using MileagePlus miles. When eligible, one of the one-way segments can display a zero-mile charge during booking.
Limitations
The Excursionist Perk is subject to several important rules:
- The free segment cannot be located within the MileagePlus region where your travel originates. For example, if your itinerary begins in North America, the complimentary leg must be within a region outside North America.
- Your overall travel must end in the same MileagePlus region where it began.
- The origin and destination of the Excursionist Perk (the free leg) must both lie within a single MileagePlus region.
- The cabin of service and award inventory for the free one-way segment must be the same as, or lower than, the cabin and inventory of the one-way award immediately preceding it.
- If multiple one-way segments qualify for the benefit, only the first qualifying segment will be free.
Consult United’s official region definitions to confirm regional boundaries before planning your itinerary.
How to Book
- Go to Book and choose Advanced Search.
- Select Miles under “Show price in” and enable the Multi-city option.
- Enter each leg of your trip and pick flights one by one for every segment.
- If eligible, the complimentary segment will appear with a “0” miles requirement during selection.
Below is an illustrative example showing a three-leg itinerary and how the Excursionist Perk appears during booking.
Trip 1: Start by searching for your first flight. In this example the first leg is Delhi (DEL) to Frankfurt (FRA), and United presents available award options for that segment.
Trip 2: After selecting the cabin for the first leg, proceed to the second. In this example United already applies the Excursionist Perk for Munich (MUC) to Paris (ORY), showing that leg as complimentary if it meets the rules.
Trip 3: Finally, choose the last leg of your itinerary. In the example the final flight is Zurich (ZRH) to Delhi (DEL). Availability and cabin options vary by date, so you may find economy or business space depending on the flight.
In this example, applying the Excursionist Perk saves roughly 25,000 United miles for the business-class segment from MUC to ORY. Actual savings depend on your chosen route, dates, and available award inventory.
The Excursionist Perk can deliver strong value when used on the right routes. Review United’s region definitions, check award availability across all legs, and build multi-city itineraries to see where this benefit yields the best savings.
