Get Your Free CIBIL Report Through HDFC Bank Today

As you may know, an RBI mandate from September 2016 requires Credit Information Companies (credit bureaus) such as CIBIL & Experian to provide every individual with at least one free credit report per year.

Previously I wrote about how to get your CIBIL score and full report for free each year. Recently, however, CIBIL’s free option has at times provided only the score rather than the complete report. Experian continues to offer a free full report and score.

There is little transparency around these differences, but you can now obtain a full CIBIL report for free through HDFC Bank. Below is what you need to know.

How to get a free CIBIL report via HDFC

HDFC has a dedicated page on the CIBIL platform where you can enter your details and access a free full CIBIL report. I tested this on several accounts I manage and it worked consistently. Follow these steps to get your free report:

  • Go to the HDFC enrollment page on CIBIL: https://myscore.cibil.com/CreditView/enrollShort.page?enterprise=HDFCBANK&offer=HDFCBANK01
  • Enter the required personal details
  • Receive your full credit report and CIBIL score instantly

Checking your own report is a soft inquiry and does not affect your credit score. It appears HDFC/CIBIL may allow another free check after three months, but I cannot confirm that timing definitively yet.

Why does HDFC provide the report for free?

When you use the HDFC link, your profile is treated as associated with HDFC in some way. CIBIL likely shares these profiles with the bank, enabling HDFC to send targeted offers such as credit card or loan promotions. This is a customer acquisition strategy similar to what other institutions do with Experian, but the CIBIL partnership is less common and may involve additional costs for the bank.

Bottom line

This arrangement benefits both the bank and customers. Making credit scores and reports easy to access is a positive step. Personally, I maintain annual subscriptions with both CIBIL and Experian, so this option is less critical for me, but it proved useful when I checked reports for family members and relatives.
