I recently received my Diners Black credit card physical statement and was pleased to find a customized spend-based offer printed inside. The offer required a spend of 2 lakhs to earn 4,000 bonus reward points on top of the regular rewards. Spend period: Oct 1 to Nov 30, 2016.

Custom Spend-Based Offer on HDFC Credit Card
Breaking down the numbers for spending 2 lakhs on the Diners Black card:
- Usual rewards: 6,600 points
- Bonus: 4,000 points
- Total: 10,600 points (valued at Rs. 10,600 on Diners site)
- Net reward rate: about 5.3% instead of the usual 3.3%
A 5.3% effective reward rate is attractive. If you combine this with category multipliers such as 10X partners, the total rewards can become substantial. In addition, some promotions reward extra points for weekend spends — another potential boost worth considering.
My mother also received a spend-based promotion by email on her HDFC Moneyback credit card. The offer was less generous than the Diners Black promotion but still provided added value for targeted spending.
Spend based Offer on HDFC Credit Card
Not the most generous promotion, but still a useful incentive for planned spending.
A few things to note:
- Many of these targeted offers appear on the physical card statement. If you’ve switched off printed statements, consider keeping them because they can contain valuable, personalized promotions that may not reach you by email.
- If you aren’t receiving promotional emails for a card you use, contact customer care and request that promotional communications be enabled. I didn’t receive emails for my Diners Black or previous Regalia card until I made that request.
- Keep an eye on email for offers. My mother’s Moneyback promotion arrived that way, so email can still be a useful channel for targeted deals.
Banks are increasingly using data and automated systems to tailor offers to individual customers based on past spending patterns. When executed well, those personalized promotions can significantly increase the value you get from a card.
