Amex Credit Limit Increase up to ₹15L Based on Your Spending

American Express India has rolled out a targeted credit limit enhancement program for selected cardholders. The promotion allows eligible customers to receive an increased credit limit if they meet a specified spending requirement within a limited time window.

The offer varies by customer: the required spend amount and the upgraded credit limit depend on the individual cardholder’s invitation. Below is a concise summary of the program as communicated to recipients.

Offer Details

Offer Receive a higher credit limit of Rs. XXXX after spending Rs. YYYY within 90 days
Offer Period 3 July to 30 October 2021
Enrolment Period 3 July to 2 August 2021
Fulfilment Credit limit revised within 5 business days after enrolment
If target not reached Increased limit will be reverted within 90 days from the offer end date
  • Sample Offer: A cardmember may opt in to increase the credit limit to INR 15,00,000. After enrollment, the cardmember must spend INR 3,00,000 within 90 days from the enrollment date. If the target is not met, the credit limit will be reduced back to the previous level within 90 days after the offer ends.

There appear to be five variants of this promotion, offering potential limits of INR 15,00,000, 10,00,000, 6,00,000, 4,00,000 or 3,00,000 depending on the invited customer’s specific terms.

An advantage of this program is that the increased limit is applied quickly — typically within five days of enrolment — and remains in place provided the enrolment-period spend target is achieved.

On a side note, this update also suggests Amex has raised the maximum cap on some charge/credit products from about INR 8,00,000 to INR 15,00,000, a notable change from prior limits.

My Thoughts

A spend-linked, targeted limit enhancement is an uncommon but thoughtful offer. It aligns the issuer’s risk appetite with card usage: customers who can demonstrate short-term spending capability are rewarded with higher available credit.

This structure can be useful in genuine situations where customers face large, unexpected expenses — for example, significant medical bills — and need temporary access to higher credit. By tying the increase to measurable spend, the bank manages its exposure while giving selected customers flexibility.

So far, the program appears to be narrowly targeted. I have not personally received this offer, and acquaintances with Amex cards also report not seeing it. That suggests this may be a limited trial or selective pilot aimed at a small segment of the card base.

Given how banks have adjusted credit practices following regulatory guidance, it’s notable to see Amex testing creative approaches to manage limits while meeting customer needs. Similar initiatives have appeared from other issuers as they experiment with ways to responsibly extend credit.

If you received this limit enhancement invitation, consider the spend requirement carefully and ensure you can meet it within the 90-day window to retain the higher limit. Feel free to share your experience or questions in the comments if available on your platform.
