The HDFC Bank Regalia Credit Card has been one of India’s most recognisable premium cards for nearly a decade. Its design and benefits set a benchmark that influenced many subsequent premium credit cards. Over time, however, the card has undergone several devaluations that have eroded some of its earlier appeal.
Today the original Regalia is less compelling than it once was. Many users looking for a modern alternative prefer the updated Regalia Gold product. Still, this review covers the classic Regalia card so you can evaluate its features and decide if it suits your needs.

Overview
| Type | Semi-Premium Credit Card |
| Reward Rate | 1.3% – 2.2% |
| Best for | Airport lounge access |
| USP | Priority Pass for Add-on cards |
This is the original Regalia product. Do not confuse it with Regalia First, which is positioned a step below. The classic Regalia remains attractive for family travellers because add-on cards provide lounge access for family members, including international lounge visits via Priority Pass.
Joining Fees
| Joining Fee | 2,500 INR + GST (commonly issued as First Year Free) |
| Welcome Benefit | 2,500 Reward Points (on paid issuance) |
| Renewal / Annual Fee | 2,500 INR + GST |
| Renewal Benefit | 2,500 Reward Points (on paid cards) |
| Renewal Fee waiver | On spending > 3,00,000 INR annually |
The card is frequently issued with the first year free. For many cardholders who spend around INR 3 lakh a year, the renewal fee is effectively waived. In some cases the card may be offered as lifetime free depending on promotional offers.
Regalia has several variants and related products, including:
- Regalia (original)
- Doctor’s Regalia (no longer issued)
- Business Regalia (with some different benefits)
- Corporate Regalia (no longer issued)
Separate products in the wider family include Regalia First and Regalia Gold, both of which differ in benefits and positioning.
Reward Points
Default Reward Rate
- 4 Reward Points (RP) for every INR 150 retail spend
- 1 Reward Point = INR 0.50 when redeemed via the Regalia travel portal
- Effective reward rate: approximately 1.3%
Milestone Benefit
- Earn 10,000 Reward Points on annual spends of INR 5,00,000 in an anniversary year
- Earn 15,000 Reward Points on annual spends of INR 8,00,000 in an anniversary year
- Fulfilment: Rewards credited within about a month of reaching the milestone
If you meet the higher milestone (INR 8 lakh annually), your effective reward rate can rise to about 2.2%, which is competitive but not exceptional among premium cards.
Offers
HDFC periodically runs merchant-specific promotions that multiply points—2x, 5x or more—boosting the effective reward rate for targeted spends. Historically some promotions allowed cardholders to earn large volumes of points, but recent offers often carry lower caps, limiting potential upside.
Redemption
The best value from Regalia points is realized when redeeming for travel bookings (flights and hotels) through the card’s travel portal. Redeeming for gift vouchers or shopping catalog items typically yields lower value per point.
Redemptions are straightforward and many cardholders have used points to cover significant travel costs. For maximum value, prioritise travel redemptions over catalog vouchers.
Lounge Access
| ACCESS TYPE | ACCESS VIA | ACCESS LIMIT |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic (Primary) | Visa / Mastercard | 2 per quarter |
| International (Primary) | Priority Pass | 6 per year (shared) |
| International (Add-on) | Priority Pass | 6 per year (shared) |
Domestic access: HDFC requires quarterly spends of INR 1 lakh to be eligible for up to two domestic lounge accesses per quarter. This threshold can be inconvenient compared with simpler annual-based schemes.
International access: Priority Pass membership is provided for international lounge access. Each add-on cardholder receives a separate Priority Pass card, which can be especially useful when travelling with family. To check remaining visits, verify activity with Priority Pass and compare against the card’s annual limits.
Forex Markup Fee
- Forex markup fee: 2% + GST (around 2.36%)
- Reward rate on international spends: ~1.3% (same as domestic)
- Net result: overseas transactions typically result in a small net loss unless you have additional protections or offers applied
The Regalia card is not ideal for regular international card spends due to the forex markup. If you opt into HDFC’s Global Value program, you can get an extra 1% cashback on international spends, which can offset the forex fee and make the transactions roughly neutral.
Golf Benefit
While the Regalia credit card does not include a dedicated in-house golf programme, some Mastercard-issued Regalia cards offer Mastercard golf privileges—typically one lesson per month and a limited number of complimentary games per year. Specific entitlements vary by variant and issuing network.
How to Apply
- New applicants: Typically require annual income above INR 12 lakh (applications via branch or online)
- HDFC Preferred Banking customers: Preferred status with consistent balances and good account history increases approval chances even if the standard income threshold is not met
- Upgrade path: Existing HDFC cardholders with limits above INR 3 lakh and healthy spends may be eligible for an upgrade to Regalia
Bottomline
- Cardexpert Rating: 3.5/5
The HDFC Bank Regalia Credit Card remains a well-known and well-designed product with solid lounge benefits and reasonable rewards potential for targeted users. Brand recognition and family-friendly add-on benefits are notable strengths.
If your priority is lounge access for family members, Regalia can be a solid choice. However, for many users there are newer variants and competing cards that offer stronger ongoing value—Regalia Gold or other premium travel cards may suit those needs better.
