Redeem 12,000 Amex Membership Rewards for ₹5,310 Statement Credit

While chatting recently with American Express chat support, the representative explained card benefits and detailed ways to redeem Amex Membership Rewards (MR) points for the best value. During that conversation I learned American Express has quietly introduced a new redemption option for Gold cards (both MRCC and Gold charge cards).

Here are the current options for redeeming Amex MR Points as statement credit:

  • 12,000 Amex MR Points (NEW): Rs. 5,310 statement credit (available once per calendar year)
  • 18,000 Amex MR Points: Rs. 7,500 statement credit
  • 24,000 Amex MR Points: Rs. 10,000 statement credit

A quick calculation shows the 12,000-point option offers slightly higher value—about 44 paise per point versus roughly 41 paise per point for the larger redemptions. Keep in mind the 12K option can be used only once per calendar year, and right now looks like a convenient time to consider this redemption.

Note: I confirmed with customer care by phone that this appears to be a temporary offer and could be withdrawn at any time.

Bottomline

This is a welcome move from American Express. The 12K option makes it easier for Gold cardholders to redeem points because reaching 12,000 points is more attainable for many users—especially with the monthly 1K bonus some cards provide—than accumulating 18K or 24K points.

In short, the Gold collection now lists redemption options at 12K (temporary), 18K, and 24K points. If you want alternatives to redeeming through the Gold collection, there are other ways to maximize Amex MR point value.

This change shows American Express is listening to cardholders. If you have suggestions or requests, share them with Amex via their online survey or customer care channels.
