Amex Cards Offer the Lowest EMI Interest Rates

Whether you’re buying a new iPhone or making a high-value purchase, credit card EMI options can help make that purchase more manageable. I generally advise caution around credit card EMIs because of high interest rates from many issuers. However, when EMI rates are low and terms are transparent, converting a purchase to EMI can be a sensible choice.

Interest Rates on Other Credit Cards

Credit card EMI pricing varies widely across issuers. A couple of years ago, HDFC offered among the lowest EMI interest rates—around 12%—which made it attractive for converting purchases into EMIs. Those lower rates were helpful in specific situations. Today, however, HDFC’s EMI rates have risen significantly and can start at 15% or even 17% for short tenures, making their EMI plans less competitive than before.

Interest Rates on Amex Credit Cards

American Express currently offers one of the more competitive EMI products in the market, with advertised interest near 12% p.a. and appealing features such as no processing fee and no foreclosure charges for certain conversion channels. Below are the typical EMI conversion routes available to Amex cardholders and what each option generally costs.

EMI Options on American Express Cards

1. Through Merchant

Merchant-specific EMI offers are set up between a retailer and American Express. These promotions appear on ecommerce platforms or at brand stores and are activated at the point of sale. Merchant offers often provide favorable terms because they are negotiated by the merchant to boost sales.

  • Interest: 12% p.a. (typical)
  • Processing fee: 0%
  • Foreclosure charges: 0%
  • EMI tenure: Depends on the merchant

2. Through OTP Page (Amex Safekey)

When completing an online purchase, some websites present EMI conversion as an option during OTP or 3-D Secure authentication (Amex SafeKey). Choosing EMI at this stage is convenient and often retains the promotional merchant rates where applicable.

  • Interest: 12% p.a.
  • Processing fee: 0%
  • Foreclosure charges: 0%
  • EMI tenure: 3, 6, 9, 12 months

3. Through Customer Care

If you decide after a transaction that you want to convert it to EMI, you can request conversion by contacting American Express customer care. Post-transaction conversions typically carry different pricing and fees than merchant-led or OTP-page conversions.

  • Interest: 14% p.a.
  • Processing fee: 2% of the transaction amount
  • Foreclosure charges: 0%
  • EMI tenure: 6, 12 months

Note: The minimum transaction amount for EMI conversion is 5,000 INR. At any given time you can have up to six active EMIs. Jewellery purchases are generally excluded from EMI conversions.

For online purchases, converting during the OTP verification stage is often the best approach because those conversions typically reflect merchant-negotiated terms or the issuer’s most favorable online EMI pricing. For offline purchases, converting at the time of swipe may secure better rates. Converting after the fact via customer care remains an option and, while slightly more expensive, 14% with a 2% processing fee is competitive relative to many other banks.

Bottomline

American Express offers competitive EMI conversion options at present, combining relatively low interest with no foreclosure charges in many cases. These features provide flexibility: borrowers can prepay EMIs without penalty, which is uncommon with several competitors that often levy 2–3% foreclosure fees. While promotional terms can change, Amex has maintained similar EMI offers for an extended period, suggesting relative stability in the current structure.

If you prioritize EMI conversions when choosing a card, evaluate the specific Amex card’s benefits and fee structure. Some Amex products occasionally feature waived renewal fees or lifetime-free options based on spending thresholds, which can further improve overall card value beyond EMI features.
