Standard Chartered Bank has introduced the SC Smart, an entry-level credit card aimed at Indian consumers. This new card is distinct from the earlier SC DigiSmart product the bank launched a few years ago.
It’s worth noting that Standard Chartered markets cards with the same name in other countries, such as Singapore and Malaysia, where those variants offer more generous benefits—examples include consistent cashback rates at popular merchants and attractive joining offers. The Indian SC Smart is a different, simplified offering.

In about ten days I received two Standard Chartered credit cards. This quick turnaround highlights how smooth internal upgrades and new card issuances can be when the bank streamlines processes for existing customers.
The Card
The SC Smart credit card features an attractive dual-tone, multi-reflective finish that catches light well. The plastic quality feels solid for an entry-level product. The credit limit assigned in this instance was just under INR 400,000, which is generous for this segment.
Features & Benefits
- 2% cashback on all online transactions, including wallet top-ups and payments, capped at INR 1,000 per month.
- 1% cashback on offline transactions, capped at INR 500 per month.
- Fuel transactions and cash withdrawals are excluded from cashback earnings.
- 3-month EMI option at 0.99% per month with no processing fee for transactions above INR 2,000.
- Cashback is redeemable through the bank’s Reward 360 portal. Redemptions are permitted once 1,000 points are accumulated, and then in multiples of 500 points.
- As a cashback-focused card, there is currently no reward redemption fee.
- The card does not include fuel surcharge waivers, reduced foreign exchange mark-up, movie discounts, or airport lounge access.
If maximizing the 2% cashback is your goal, you would need to spend up to about INR 50,000 per month on eligible online transactions to reach the monthly cap.
Benefit Calculator
For example, spending INR 10,000 per month online (INR 120,000 annually) would yield 2% cashback, or approximately INR 2,400 per year. With typical fee-waiver thresholds, this level of use can also cover the card’s annual fee.
There are no tiered milestone benefits tied to higher spends on this card, so this earn-rate and cap represent the practical maximum value for most users. If you already hold other reward-rich cards, SC Smart can serve as a straightforward cashback supplement.
Upgrade to Ultimate
Standard Chartered allows existing cardholders to apply for an upgrade or additional card without a long cooling-off period. The bank requires a nominal INR 1 authorization on the existing card with OTP verification to initiate the process.
If you meet the bank’s internal criteria, the new card will typically appear in your account within a week. At the time of upgrading to the Ultimate product, the bank’s guideline indicated a minimum existing limit of INR 400,000 on the current Standard Chartered card; previously this threshold was INR 300,000. Despite the higher threshold, I was able to secure the upgrade.
Note: Standard Chartered has enabled online applications for the Ultimate card on the Visa Infinite platform following restrictions on certain networks.
Bottomline
The SC Smart credit card is a simple, low-fee entry-level cashback card that delivers straightforward rewards on everyday online and wallet spending. While it offers clear value for users who focus on online transactions, several competitors in the same segment—such as Axis ACE, IDFC First, and HDFC Millenia—provide stronger propositions in terms of benefits and value.
Ultimately, SC Smart is a solid basic cashback option. However, it would be more competitive if launched in India with features closer to its more generous international variants.
